Men's Track and Field Heads to 2007 NCAA East Regional Championship

CONWAY, SC – The Coastal Carolina men’s track and field team will send five athletes to the 2007 NCAA East Regional Championship in Gainesville, Fla. to compete on Friday and Saturday, May 25-26.  The event is being hosted by The University of Florida at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.   Several hundred of the nation’s top track and field athletes from more than 300 colleges and universities will be competing for the right to advance to the 2007 NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. on June 6-9.  The top five finishers in each individual event and the top three relay teams in the 4x100 and the 4x400 meters will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships.  In addition, six to eight At-Large athletes will be added to each event; however, they must finish in the top 12 in their event at the Regional and then are picked according to their performance over the entire season.   Representing CCU will be All-American Thomas Jordan (Lebanon Valley, Pa./Cedar Crest) in the javelin. He is currently ranked 10th in the region with a season best throw of 217-9.  Also competing in the javelin will be Kyle Hoddy (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) who has a personal best throw of 204-10 and currently ranks third on Coastal’s All-time list.   In the long jump will be Jerome Simpson (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville). He is the school record holder with a leap of 24-6 and currently ranks eighth in the East Region.   Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorepark JC)) will throw the hammer at the meet. He has a personal best throw 182-6 and is third on CCU’s All-Time list.   The only Chanticleer in a running event this weekend will be Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) who will compete in the 400-meter-hurdles.
