CONWAY – Four Coastal Carolina men’s track and field individuals and a relay team have qualified for the East Preliminary Round of the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The NCAA East Preliminary Round is hosted by Indiana University at the Hoosiers’ Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex from May 26-28.
Earning individual bids to the East Preliminary Round by placing in the top 48 of their respective events in the east region are Jacques Watson (high jump), Jason Flanagan (javelin), Corey Jameson (100-meters) and Kyle Kling (10,000-meters). The Chanticleers 100-meter relay team also qualified for the preliminary round by recording a top 24 time in the east region. Jameson, Chris Lawson, Ryan Edlich and Lenny Steed compose the quartet
Watson is seeded 22 in the high jump after clearing a season-high height of 2.14m (7-0.25) at the Big South Championship meet on April 22. This will be Watson’s fourth time competing in an NCAA preliminary round in the high jump. The senior advanced to both the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Championships after turning in third place finishes at the regionals.
Flanagan will be making his second consecutive trip to the NCAA preliminary round in the javelin. The number 16 seeded junior threw for a season-best distance of 70.09m (229-11) at the Seminole Invitational. Last season, Flanagan narrowly missed qualifying for the championship by two feet as he placed 18th overall with a distance of 64.67 (212-2).
Jameson will be pulling double duty at the preliminary meet as he is the only Chanticleer to qualify for two events. Jameson is seeded 37 in the 100-meter dash after posting a blazing time of 10.42 at the North Florida Invitational. Jameson also qualified for the preliminary round in the 100-meters in 2009. In addition, the junior runs the starter leg of the Chants 22 seeded 4x100-meter relay team that qualified with a season-best time of 40.27 at the Duke Invitational.
Standout distance runner Kling will be making his NCAA East Preliminary Round debut in the 10,000-meters. Kling earned the 48 seed after posting a season-best time of 30:10.71 at the Raleigh Relays on March 25.
The Coastal 4x100-meter relay team has qualified for the first round for the second consecutive season. The team has earned the 22 seed at the meet after the foursome of Jameson, Lawson, Edlich and Steed posted a 40.27 at the Seminole Invitational. This same four member team set the Coastal Carolina record of 40.10 at the 2010 NCAA East Preliminary Round. Freshmen Tyler Askew and Ronnie Jackson are also entered with the 4x100-meter relay team as alternates.
The top 12 athletes in each event will advance to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa June 8-11.
