Gilmore Picks Up 800th Career Win as Baseball Defeats Charleston Southern 9-1

More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University head baseball coach Gary Gilmore earned his 800th career victory as the Chanticleers (40-13, 19-5 Big South) defeated Charleston Southern (16-34, 10-13 Big South) 9-1 May 14 in Conway, S.C. Coastal Carolina also clinched a share of the Big South regular-season title with the win and the Chanticleers have now won 40 games in a season nine out of the last 11 seasons.   Charleston Southern started the scoring, picking up an unearned run in the first. Tom Burkett was hit by the first pitch from junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic). The Bucs then put runners on the corners with no one out on a fielding error by freshman Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville). McCully got Patrick Dolan and Tyler Thornburg to strike out swinging, but Nick Chinners would reach on an infield single, scoring Burkett.   Coastal Carolina would answer with three runs in the third. Junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his ninth of the season. Sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) then walked and stole second. Sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) walked, which was followed by a double from junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.), which scored Woodward. Senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) then brought in Noel with a sacrifice fly to center.   The Chants added a run in the fourth as Davis drove in freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) with a single to left. Noel then brought in the Chanticleers fifth run in the sixth inning as his sacrifice fly brought in Iglesias.   The runs were more than enough for McCully, who allowed just four hits and an unearned run with five strikeouts in seven innings pitched. He earned his sixth win of the season. Coastal Carolina did add three runs in the seventh. With one out, senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was hit by a pitch, moved up two bases on two wild pitches and scored on a Bowman single. The Chanticleers would load the bases and score a run as Bowman came in on a wild pitch. Freshman Taylor Motter (North Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) then scored on a wild pitch, making it 8-1 Chanticleers.   Coastal Carolina scored its final run in the eighth as redshirt freshman Rich Witten (Danville, Ky./Danville) singled home Noel.    Five different Chanticleers had two hits apiece, while Iglesias, Bowman and Noel scored two runs apiece. For Charleston Southern, Chinners had a run-batted-in to go along with a base hit.   The loss went to Jesse Cadenhead on the mound. He allowed eight hits and five runs in six innings.   Gilmore now moves his overall record to 800-392 in his 20th year as a head coach. He is a five-time Big South Coach of the Year and has won 40 or more games in a season 13 times.

Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern will play game two of the series Friday, May 15 at 6 p.m.
