Baseball's Wheeler Named Big South Pitcher of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb senior outfielder Daniel Cooke (Charlotte, N.C.) and Coastal Carolina sophomore Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va.) have been named the Choice Hotels Player of the Week and New Balance Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played May 4-10, it was announced today by the League office.   Cooke batted .462 (6-13) with six RBI in three games over the weekend, helping the Bulldogs to a 2-1 series win over High Point. He belted two home runs, a double and a triple for a 1.154 slugging percentage. In Sunday’s series clincher, Cooke put GWU up 6-0 with a two-run single in the fourth, and cushioned a 6-5 lead with a two-run home run in the sixth. In the series opener Friday, Cooke had a run-scoring triple, and in game two, went 2-3 with a home run, two walks and two runs scored. On Sunday, Cooke surpassed 250 career hits, becoming the first known two-sport athlete in NCAA Division I history to accumulate 250 tackles in football (281), 250 hits in baseball (250), 150 runs scored in baseball (169) and 75 stolen bases (92).   Wheeler was dominant in Coastal Carolina’s 8-0 win over VMI Sunday afternoon. The lefty allowed just one hit – a leadoff single to Graham Sullivan in the fifth inning. Wheeler retired the first nine batters of the game and had four 1-2-3 innings. He also allowed just one Keydet to third base. He fanned nine batters (one off his career high) and tossed his third game this season with one hit or less when pitching seven or more innings. Wheeler’s line: 1-0, 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 9 SO, 0.00 ERA, .048 opponents’ batting average.   Other Player of the Week Nominees: Derek Smith (Charleston Southern), Daniel Bowman (Coastal Carolina) and Eddie Tisdale (Winthrop).   Other Pitcher of the Week Nominees: Jesse Cadenhead (Charleston Southern) and Brett Stackhouse (Gardner-Webb).
