Track and Field Teams to Send 15 to Duke Twilight
CONWAY, S.C.-The Coastal Carolinas track and field teams had 15 athletes qualify for the Duke Twilight to be held on the campus of Duke University in Durham, N.C., May 8 at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The nine men that qualified for the meet include runners Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary (Kenyatta)) (3,000m Steeplechase), Nelson Oliveria (Coimbra, Portugal/Quinta das Flores) (1,500m) and Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) (1,500m). Junior hurdler Kendall White (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast) is competing in the 400m hurdles for the Chanticleers, while sophomore Korey Larson (Sanbam, N.Y./Niagra (Erie CC)) and freshman sprinter Charles Proctor (Cola, S.C./Richland Northeast) will run in 800m and 100m, respectively.
In the field events, junior Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach), who is coming off a individual victory in the pole vault at the Penn Relays, will compete in the pole vault for Coastal in this meet. Johnson is also the current New Balance Big South Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his individual accomplishments last week.
Freshman Tim Roa (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) will also jump in the pole vault for the Chants and junior Galen Jones (Evans, Ga./Lakeside) qualified to take part in the hammer throw.
For the women, junior throwers Brittany Reid (McKinney, Texas/Rowlett (Coffeyville J.C.)) and Tamara Bryant (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle (Moorpark C.C)) will each throw in two events. Reid will compete in the shot put and the discus, while Bryant will throw the discus and the hammer for Coastal.
Also competing this weekend for the Lady Chanticleers are sophomores Dana Sizemore (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) and Claudia Witte (Warlin, Germany/Sportgymnasium Neubrandenburg) in the javelin and 5,000m, respectively.
Others to compete in one event for CCU womens team include freshmen Aubrey Bergquist (Pataskla, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) and DeMiracle Washington (Irmo, S.C./Irmo). Bergquist will run in the 1,500 and Washington is set to compete in the triple jump.
Coastal Carolinas track and field teams will travel to Atlanta, Ga., to participate in the Georgia Tech Invitational on Fri-Sat, May 13-14.
