Baseball Sweeps Weekly Big South Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina outfielder Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C.) and Chanticleer junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla.) have been named the Choice Hotels Player of the Week and New Balance Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played April 27-May 3, it was announced today by the League office.   Gilmore hit .500 (8-16) last week and helped the Chanticleers to a three-game Big South sweep of League-leading Liberty. He opened his week going 2-3 with a double and home run at the College of Charleston. He then went 3-4 with two bunt singles, two RBI, three stolen bases and three runs scored in Coastal Carolina’s win over Wake Forest. Gilmore had a two-run single in the fifth inning of game one against Liberty that started the Chanticleers’ come-from-behind win. He also walked three times in the series opener. Gilmore ended his week with a 2-3 day and an RBI in Sunday’s win. For the week, Gilmore scored five runs, knocked in six, drew four walks, stole five bases and posted a .750 slugging percentage and .591 on-base average.   McCully, who recorded eight saves as Coastal Carolina’s closer, made just his second start of the season and defeated Big South leader Liberty, 4-1 in game two of their three-game series. McCully scattered six hits in a career-long 8.1 innings pitched. He struck out five, walked just one and had 1-2-3 innings in the second, third and eighth innings. McCully’s line last week: 1-0, 8.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 1.08 ERA, .200 opponents’ batting average.   Other Player of the Week Nominees: Rick Hoogstraten (Radford), Kevin Weidenbacher (UNC Asheville), Jordan Ballard (VMI) and Sean Sullivan (Winthrop).   Other Pitcher of the Week Nominees: Jason Patten (Radford) and Wade Newman (Winthrop).
