More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – The 22nd-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (36-13, 15-5 Big South) completed a three-game sweep of Liberty (29-17, 16-7 Big South) with a 7-2 victory May 3 in Conway, S.C.   The Chanticleers received another solid pitching performance as the duo of freshman Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) and sophomore Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek) combined to allow just six hits and two runs while striking out five and allowed just one walk. Meo improved to 6-2 on the year, going the first 6.1 innings, while Rein picked up his first save with 2.2 innings of one-hit baseball.   Coastal Carolina opened the scoring with a run in the first. Sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) walked and would get to third on two balks from Cody Brown. Noel would score on a single through the left side by senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).    The game would stay 1-0 until the fifth when Meo gave up his first hit of the game, a home run to left field by Casey Brown. The Chanticleers quickly responded with a four-run fifth. Junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) opened the frame with an infield single. He moved to second on a walk to Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville). Noel then reached on a bunt single with Iglesias scoring on a throwing error by pitcher Carter Browning. Junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.) walked to load the bases. Senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) then almost hit a grand slam, as his sacrifice fly to right that scored Davis was just short of the fence. Bortnick then made it 5-1 with a double to the right field gap.   Liberty plated a run in the seventh as Kizuku Scott walked with the bases loaded, scoring Zane Bator. The Chanticleers would get out of that jam as Rein got Matt Williams to foul out and Curran Redal to ground out to end the inning.   Coastal Carolina added insurance in the eighth as Bortnick singled and scored on a double from freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby). Bowman moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) and scored on an infield single from redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia).   Bortnick was 3-for-4 with three runs-batted-in for Coastal Carolina. Bowman and Gilmore had two hits apiece. For Liberty, Casey Brown was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.   Cody Brown was tagged with the loss on the mound. Brown pitched four innings and allowed three hits and three runs.   Coastal Carolina will take the midweek off for finals and return to the diamond Saturday, May 9 as it hosts VMI. First pitch is at 6 p.m. Liberty is at Virginia Tech May 5 at 7 p.m.
