Baseball Opens Homestand with 18-5 Win over Wake Forest

CONWAY, S.C. – The 22nd-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (33-13) opened its 10-game homestand with a resounding 18-5 win over Wake Forest (21-24) April 29 in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers pounded out 20 hits in its final non-conference regular-season game of the season.   Coastal Carolina got on the board in the first as a squeeze play from senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) scored sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton). Wake Forest came back with two runs on an Ian Tomkins double that plated Dustin Hood and Tyler Smith, but the Chants would tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a bunt single from Noel that scored redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia).    The Chanticleers had its first six-run inning of the night in the third. Freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) with one out. He went to third on a single from freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens). Gilmore then singled home Bowman with a bunt to give the Chants the 3-2 lead. Coastal Carolina would load the bases as redshirt sophomore Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) reached on an error by Bentley Heyman. Noel walked to force in a run, and then junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.) brought in two runs with a single to left. Senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) scored two more runs with a single up the middle.   The Chanticleers made it 11-2 in the fourth, as Motter doubled, Gilmore reached on a bunt single and Noell brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. Rice picked up his third and fourth run-batted-in of the game on a double in the right field gap.   Coastal Carolina scored six runs for the second time in the game in the sixth. Noell led off the inning with a solo home run to left, his first of the season. Freshman Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) then singled, stole second and went to third on a Noel single. Rice would bring both runners in with a single to center, giving him a career high six RBI. Bowman brough in two more runs with a double chopped over the third baseman’s head. Gilmore would bring in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bortnick.   Wake Forest scored three runs in the seventh off five straight hits. Hood singled to right and went to third on a Smith single. Heyman brought in two runs with a double, and then pinch hitter Carlos Lopez scored Heyman with a single to left.   The Chanticleers ended the scoring with a run in the eighth. Redshirt sophomore Dustin King (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest) doubled in Bortnick for the final 18-5 tally.   Noel and Rice had four hits apiece, while Gilmore was 3-for-4. Rice was one of six Chanticleers to have two or more RBI. For Wake Forest, Hood, Smith and Tomkins had two hits apiece, while Heyman and Tomkins had two RBI apiece.   Redshirt junior Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) earned his sixth victory of the season, going six-plus innings and allowing eight hits and five runs. Redshirt senior Kent Altman (Conway, S.C./Conway) picked up his first save of the season, striking out five in three innings. Garrett Bullock was tagged with the loss, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched.   Coastal Carolina now opens a key Big South series Friday, May 1 against league-leading Liberty. First pitch is at 6 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
