Men's Track Finishes Their First Day of Competition at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Coastal Carolina men’s track and field team finished their first day of competition at the Penn Relays on Friday, April 27. Two relay teams set new school records at the meet.   Coastal’s relay teams in the 4x110-meter-hurdle relay and the distance medley relay set new school records.  The team of Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg), Jack Hutchinson (Chester, M.D./Kent Island), Jim Chemlik (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Kasheem Clifton (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) set a new record of 59.78 in the hurdle relay.   In the distance medley relay a new school record was set at 10:06.79 by John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman), Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Cork Co., Ireland/North Monastery), Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern). They broke a school record of 10:09.33 which was set earlier this year at the CCU Invitational.   The 4x200-meter relay team ran a time of 1:28.25 and finished in 22nd place out of a total of 42 teams. The relay team included Aubrey Lemon (Goose Creek, S.C./Stratford), Wheeler, Hutchinson, Alex Levy (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley (The Citadel)).   Finishing 19th out of 57 in the 400-meter-hurdles was Tyrone Murphy with a time of 54.04.   Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorpark JC)) had a mark of 155-1 in the discuss that placed him 13th.   The Chants will wrap up competition on Saturday, April 28 with All-American Thomas Jordan (Lebanon Valley, Pa./Cedar Crest) in the championship javelin at 11 a.m. Jordan currently ranks sixth in the NCAA East Region at 217-9.   At 12:15 p.m., Sugishita and Jacob Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) will compete in the hammer throw. Edelman finished in fifth at the Big South Championship with a new personal best throw of 177-9.
