Baseball Earns Series Win over Presbyterian with an 8-3 Victory

CLINTON, S.C. – The 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (32-12, 12-5 Big South) earned a series win over Presbyterian (10-31, 5-18 Big South) with an 8-3 win over the Blue Hose April 26 in Clinton, S.C.   Junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) earned the start on the mound for the Chanticleers and wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the first. Mack Hite would single with one out. Cory Lyda then was hit by a pitch. The Blue Hose loaded the bases as Jared Combs reached on a fielding error by freshman Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville). McCully would get out of the jam as Kenny Bryant fouled out and Jesse Harmon struck out.   Coastal Carolina got on the board in the third. Redshirt freshman Tucker Frawley (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) singled to open the inning. Davis then reached on a bunt single and Frawley moved to third on a Bryant throwing error. Sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) brought in Frawley with a sacrifice bunt. Coastal Carolina then made it 2-0 with a run-scoring double by senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll).    Coastal Carolina scored single runs in fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Davis and Noel led off with singles. The Chants would load the bases as Anderson walked. Senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) hit a grounder to third base that was misplayed by Combs, allowing Davis to score. In the sixth, freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) and scored on an error by Andrew Williams.   Bortnick and freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) led off the seventh with singles. Motter would score Bortnick with a sacrifice fly to right. Presbyterian got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Nate Horton singled off sophomore Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek) with one out. He went to second on a Gabe Grammer ground out and scored on a Williams single.   Presbyterian added a run in the eighth. Lyda started the inning with a ground-rule double to right. Senior Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill) came in and got Combs to ground out, moving Lyda to third. Harmon then hit a two-out single to make it 5-2 Chanticleers.   Coastal Carolina added insurance in the ninth. Bortnick led off the inning with a single. He would trot home on Bowman’s ninth home run of the season, a shot to left field. Coastal Carolina then used some two-out magic with singles from Frawley and Davis and two wild pitches by Chris Powell to score a run.   In the bottom of the ninth, Grammer singled up the middle with one out. Williams was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Gagg struck out pinch hitter Dane Fehr, but Lyda and Combs reached on infield singles, cutting the lead to 8-3. Gagg induced Bryant into a fielder’s choice to end the game.   Rein earned the win in relief, allowing three hits and two runs in 2.1 innings. McCully struck out four and gave up two hits and no runs in 4.2 innings. Gagg pitched the final two innings, allowing a run with a strikeout.   The loss was tagged to Mitchell Odom, who fell to 3-1 on the year. Odom allowed eight hits and three earned runs in five innings.    Bortnick, David and Motter had three hits apiece for the Chants, while Lyda and Grammer had two hits apiece for the Blue Hose.   Coastal Carolina plays its final road game of the regular season Tuesday, April 28 at the College of Charleston. First pitch is at 5 p.m., at Patriots Point.
