Men’s Track To Compete in Penn Relays

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men’s track and field team heads to the Penn Relay this weekend after finishing as the runner-up at the Big South Championships last weekend. Despite the second place finish, the Chanticleers set six new school records, set two NCAA Regional qualifying marks, had 13 All-Conference performances and broke one facility record.    Competing on Friday, April 27 at 9 a.m. will be current school record holder in the 400-meter-hurdles, Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman).  Murphy holds the record with a time of 52.53 and will be chasing the regional standard of 52.51.   Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorpark JC) who just had and All-Conference finish at the Big South Conference Championships in the discus last week will compete at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.   Three relay teams will also compete on Friday. The first will be the 4x200-meters which will include Aubrey Lemon, Ben Wheeler, Jack Hutchinson and Alex Levy. They set the school record earlier this season at the Florida Relays at 1:26.94.  Aubrey Lemon (Goose Creek, S.C./Stratford) is coming off two school record performances in both the 100 and 200 meters.   CCU will also compete in the 4x110-meter-hurdle-relay. The team will be comprised of Wheeler, Hutchinson, Kasheem Clifton, and Jim Chemlik. The team represents the top four 110-high-hurdle times in Coastal history. They ran a time of 1:00.50 earlier this season at the Florida Relays. Jack Hutchinson (Chester, Md./Kent Island) holds the school record at 14.71 and finished in fourth-place at the Conference Championship.   The distance medley relay team will also compete. John Heron will run the 1200 meters, Murphy will run the 400 meters, Jamie McCarthy will run the 800 meters, and Doug Currie will finish with a 1600 meters. They will be chasing school record of 10:09.33 which was set earlier this year at the CCU Invitational. Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) is the school record holder in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:50.69.   Team Captain, Marcus Johnson (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson) will compete in the long jump event at 3:30 p.m. and has a personal best leap of 23-3.5.   Competing on Saturday, April 26, will be All-American Thomas Jordan (Lebanon Valley, Pa./Cedar Crest) in the championship javelin at 11 a.m. Jordan currently ranks sixth in the NCAA East Region at 217-9.   At 12:15 p.m., Sugishita and Jacob Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) will compete in the hammer throw. Edelman finished in fifth at the Big South Championship with a new personal best throw of 177-9.
