CLINTON, S.C. – The 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (31-11, 11-4 Big South) scored all 14 runs with two outs in a 14-8 victory over Presbyterian (9-30, 4-17 Big South) April 24 in game one of a three-game Big South series. The win snaps the Chanticleers’ four-game losing streak and ties them with Liberty in the loss column after the Flames lost to Gardner-Webb 9-8.   Sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) led off the Chanticleer first with a single up the middle. He stole second and went to third on a groundout by senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor). Noel would score on a double in the gap in right field by senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll), giving the Chants the early 1-0 lead.   The Blue Hose answered with a run in the first. Mack Hite singled with one out. He went to third on a Cory Lyda single and scored as Jared Combs’ grounder to second was mishandled by freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard, Md./Riverdale Baptist).    The Chants exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning, taking the 8-1 lead. With one out, junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) was hit by a pitch. He went to second on a grounder from freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens). After Winegardner was hit by a pitch, Noel singled home Iglesias to give the Chanticleers the lead. Junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa./Elgin C.C.) made it 4-1 with a single up the middle to score Winegardner and Noel. After Bortnick singled, Anderson brought home Rice with a single up the middle. Freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) had the big hit, a three-run home run, off and over the fence in left field, to give the Chants the 8-1 lead. It was Bowman’s eighth home run of the season.   The Chants added three runs in the fifth. Noel hit a two-run home run with two outs, scoring Igleisas, who reached on an error to start the inning.  Rice walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Bortnick single.   Presbyterian plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Combs led off the inning with a single. He would go to third as Winegardner’s throw to second off of Tony Micklon’s grounder was wild. Combs scored on a groundout by Jesse Harmon and Micklon would cross home on a single from Nate Horton.   Noel continued his hot day in the seventh, singling to center to score Winegardner. The Blue Hose then sent 10 men to the plate in the seventh to get back into the game. Andrew Williams and Hite led off the inning with singles. Sophomore Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) struck out Lyda, but the Blue Hose loaded the bases on a Combs single. Redshirt senior Kent Altman (Conway, S.C./Conway) came in and gave up an infield single to Micklon. Harmon brought in Hite with a groundout to first. Rhinesmith brought in two runs with a double to left center. Gabe Grammar brought in a run with a single to center, making it 12-8 Coastal Carolina. Sophomore Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek) came in and got Willams to ground to third on a fielder’s choice to end the threat.   Coastal Carolina added insurance in the eighth as Motter doubled home redshirt sophomore Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) and redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) with two outs.   Wheeler earned his eighth win of the season, striking out eight in 6.1 innings. He allowed nine hits and five earned runs. Junior Caleb Cuevas (Fletcher, N.C./Louisburg J.C.) struck out three in 1.2 innings of work to end the contest. The loss went to Garrett Moore, who allowed 10 hits and eight runs with three strikeouts in four innings of work.   Noel was 4-for-6 with a home run, three runs and four RBI in the win. Anderson added three hits for the Chanticleers. For Presbyterian, Combs was 3-for-5.   Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian will play game two of the three-game series Saturday, April 25 at 2 p.m.
