Mens Track in Second-Place after Day Two of Competition in Big South Championship
CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University mens track and field team finished the second day of competition at the 2007 New Balance Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Friday, Apr. 20. Three Chanticleers earned All-Conference honors and nine advance to the finals on Saturday.
In the decathlon, Jack Hutchinson (Chester, Md./Kent Island) collected 6,068 points for a third-place finish and All-Conference honors in the event. Hutchinson also qualified for tomorrows final in the 110-meter-high hurdles with a time of 14.71 in the prelims.
Also qualifying in the 110-hurdles was Benjamin Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) finishing in 14.81 and Kasheem Clifton (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) with a time of 15.03.
John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) ran a personal best time of 9:28.52 in the 3,000-meter-steeplechase which earned him All-Conference accolades and a second-place finish. Jake Morris (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) was right behind him in third and was also named All-Conference with a time of 9:42.75. Timmy Supplee (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) finished in 10:16.28 for eighth-place.
In the high jump, David Long (Chapin, S.C./Hammond (Lakeland (Wisc.) College) had a fifth-place finish after clearing 6-4. Jerome Simpson (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville) finished in eighth and cleared 6-2.
Jacob Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) set a new personal best in the shot put with a toss of 50-8 and finished in fourth. In sixth-place was Chris Abercrombie (Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin (Charleston Southern)) with a mark of 45-06.
Qualifying for finals in the 100 meters was Aubrey Lemon (Goose Creek, S.C./Stratford) (10.70) and Whittmin Reese (Durham, S.C./Southern Durham) (10.84).
In the 200-meter-dash preliminary Lemon ran a season best time of 21.52 and Jason Lambert (Londonberry, N.H./Londonberry) ran a personal best time of 21.82, both qualifying for the final.
Also qualifying for finals is Jarvarius Phelps (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood) in the 400 meters, Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) in the 400-meter-hurdles and Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Cork Co., Ireland/North Monastery) in the 800 meters. Phelps qualified with a personal best time of 48.40. Murphy is the returning champion in the 400 hurdles and was the top finisher in the prelims with a time of 53.19. McCarthy qualified in the 800-meter-run with a finishing time 1:56.22.
