Men’s Track Heads to 2007 New Balance Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championship

CONWAY, S.C.—The Coastal Carolina University men’s track and field team heads to Lynchburg, Va. to compete in the 2007 New Balance Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championship which will begin on Thursday, Apr. 19 and end on Saturday, Apr. 21.   Coastal will look to defend their 2006 Big South Championship. Three Chanticleers will also look to defend their individual titles. Thomas Jordan (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) won the javelin a year ago with a mark of 222-11 will return. Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorepark)) will defend his title in the discus after winning last year with a throw of 165-10 . Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) is also a returning champion in the 400-meter-hurdles after winning in 2006 with a time of 53.13.   Three Chants are also entering the championship with the top qualifying marks. The first being Jordan in the javelin and the second is freshman John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) in the 3,000-meter-steeplechase. Third, Jack Hutchinson (Chester, Md./Kent Island) leads the Big South in the decathlon with 6305 points.   Chris Abercrombie (Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin (Charleston Southern)) who won two events last weekend will also lead the team. Abercrombie set a new personal best in the shot put at 47-11 and a seasonal best in the discus at the Chanticleer Classic.   During this season, CCU has set five new school records and qualified three athletes to the NCAA East Regional Championship.
