Men's Track Concludes Competition at Final Home Meet

CONWAY, S.C.The Coastal Carolina men’s track and field team finished competition in the Chanticleer Classic, the final home meet of the 2007 season, on Saturday, Apr. 14. Chris Abercrombie won both the discus and shot put at the meet.   “This was a great tune-up before we head to the Conference meet next week, head coach Jeff Jacobs said. “We had a lot of guys that needed to improve some things and some that needed rest, so this was a great week for us as a team.”   Chris Abercrombie (Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin (Charleston Southern)) won the discus with a season best throw and now ranks fifth on CCU’s All-time list (157’ 5”/47.98m). Abercrombie also won the shot put with personal best toss (47’ 10.75”/14.60m) and also now ranks fifth on CCU list in both events. He also placed fifth in the hammer throw.   Jacob Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) placed second in the hammer with a personal best hurl that makes him fifth in Coastal history. He also finished in second-place in the shot put (46’ 10.25”/14.28m).   In the 800 meters Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Ireland/North Monastery) took home first-place in a personal best time of 1:54.14. He now ranks fifth on the All-time list for Coastal. Another personal best came from John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) who placed third in the 800 meters finishing in 1:56.00.   Jake Morris (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) finished the 3,000 meters in second-place with a time of 9:03.16. Also with a second-place finish was Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) in the 400-meter-hurdles with a time of 53.77.   Jerome Simpson (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville) and David Long (Chapin, S.C./Hammond Academy) made their 2007 debut in the high jump. Simpson won the event clearing with a leap of 6-6.75/2.00m and Long finished tied for second-place clearing 6-2.75/1.90m.   Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) was third in the 110-high-hurdles with a personal best finish of 14.83. He is now second in CCU history.   In the pole vault Steve Harmon (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) cleared 13-7.25/4.15m for a fourth-place finish and a personal best height.   Whittmin Reese (Durham, N.C./Southern Durham) posted a personal best in the 100-meter-dash finishing with a time of 10.95 for ninth-place.   In the long jump, Marcus Johnson (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson (Clafin)) finished in third place  with a jump of 21-4. Also in third, was Coastal’s 4x100-meter-relay with a time of 41.71. (Phelps, Lemon, Wheeler, Lambert).   Up next, the Coastal men head to Lynchburg, Va. on Apr. 19-21 for the Big South Conference Championship being hosted by Liberty University.
