Baseball's Rice Named Big South Co-Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and VMI junior Jordan Ballard (Troy, Va.) have been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Co-Player of the Week, while Winthrop junior Tyler McBride (Columbia, S.C.) has been named New Balance Pitcher of the Week for games played March 30-April 5, it was announced today by the League office.   Rice batted .600 (12-20) in Coastal Carolina’s five wins last week with five runs scored, four doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. He also had a 1.100 slugging percentage and a .619 on-base average. In Friday’s 11-6 win over Gardner-Webb, Rice went 5-5 with two home runs, a double, four RBI and two runs scored. He had multiple hits and scored a run in four of the five games, and ended the week with a 2-4, three RBI performance in Sunday’s 10-4 win over the Bulldogs. Rice raised his batting average 65 points during the week.   Ballard hit .647 (11-17) in four games for VMI with seven runs scored, seven driven in, six doubles and one home run. He had multiple hits in each game, including three-hit games in three-straight outings, in addition to a 1.176 slugging percentage and .684 on-base average. In Friday’s win over Liberty, Ballard was 3-5 with three doubles and four RBI. The next day, he was 3-3 with a home run, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored.   In just his second start of the season, McBride held Charleston Southern to one unearned run and one hit in seven innings of work Sunday in defeating the Buccaneers, 2-1. He walked one and struck out eight batters, and did not allow a CSU hit until the sixth inning in recording his first win of the season. McBride’s line last week: 1-0, 7 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO, .045 opponents’ batting average.    Other Baseball Player of the Week Nominees: Nick Chinners (Charleston Southern), Billy Alvino (High Point), Curran Redal (Liberty), Jared Combs (Presbyterian), Alex Gregory (Radford), Beau Zinman (UNC Asheville) and Kevin Nolan (Winthrop).   Other Baseball Pitcher of the Week Nominees: Brandon Roberts (Charleston Southern), Anthony Meo (Coastal Carolina), Jeremy Berg (High Point), Andrew Wilson (Liberty), Abram Williams (Radford) and Ryan Dull (UNC Asheville).
