COASTAL TRACK & FIELD COMPETES IN THE DUKE INVITATIONAL: Coastal Carolinas Mens Track & Field team will compete in the Duke Invitational Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8. Coastal will be joined with two Big South rivals, UNC Asheville and High Point, as well as Campbell, Duke, North Carolina, Oklahoma, James Madison, Georgetown, and William and Mary. Competition will begin Friday at 12 p.m. with the hammer throw.
TOP PERFORMERS IN THE DUKE INVITATIONAL: Coastal will be highlighted by Galen Jones in the hammer throw and shot put as well as Tommy Sugishita in the hammer and discus throw. Freshman Dorian Johnson will compete in the discus. Senior Nelson Oliveira will run the 1500 with teammates Doug Currie and Jamie McCarthy. Aubrey Lemon will compete in the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay, and 4x400 relay. Tyrone Murphy will compete in the 400 intermediate hurdles and the 4x100 and 4x400 relalays. Marcus Johnson will compete in the long jump and sophomore Blair Paul in the 5,000m.
TWO TRACK MEMBERS COMPETE IN TEXAS RELAYS: Senior Mark Johnson and redshirt sophomore Thomas Jordan will be competing in the 79th annual Texas Relays, in Austin Texas, which begin Wednesday, April 5. Competition for the Chanticleers is Saturday, April 8. They will be competing with athletes from Texas, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Arkansas, Arizona, Oregon, and California. Competition for the Chanticleers will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with the javelin, followed by the pole vault competition at 3 p.m.
BIG SOUTH CONFERNCE LEADERS: The Chanticleers have several members of the track & field team on the Big South Conference top preformance list for the 2006 season. Senior Nelson Oliveira is in the fourth spot in the 800m with a time of 1:55.29 followed by teammate Doug Currie in fifth with a 1:55.88 mark. Oliveira also has the top time in the 5000m with a personal- best 14:29.99 time. Freshman Tyrone Murphy holds the first spot in the 400m hurdles with a personal-best of 52.77. Senior Mark Johnson is first in the pole vault with a 172.5" recorded at the Western Carolina Invitational. Thomas Jordan holds the top spot in the javelin with a 2242". Galen Jones is third in the hammer throw with a national qualifying mark of 1862.5" and is second in shot put with a distance 487.75". Tommy Sugishita is first in discus with a 16211.5" mark followed by teammates Eric Singleton in third with a 15311.5" and freshman Dorian Johnson in fifth with a personal-best of 1530", posted at the Western Carolina Invitational.
WESTERN CAROLINA INVITATIONAL RESULTS: The Coastal Carolina mens track and field squad posted four podium finishes on the first day of the Western Carolina Invitational, Mar. 31.
In the shot put, junior Galen Jones was the top collegian and second overall with a throw of 14.78m (48 6"), while sophomore Jacob Edelman was right behind him in third at 13.90m (45 7.25"). Art Hill was next for Coastal in sixth with a toss of 12.97m (42 6.75").
In the discus, Coastal went 2-3-4, led by junior Tommy Sugishita at 48.27m (158 4"). Freshman Dorian Johnson was third with a new personal best by three inches of 46.63m (153 0"), which was also the fifth-best in CCU history. Freshman Eric Singleton was fourth in the event at 45.43m (149 0"). Hill was eighth for CCU at 42.92m (140 10"), while sophomore Edelman was ninth at 42.84m (140 7").
Junior Marcus Johnson was CCUs only competitor in the long jump, finishing fifth with a leap of 6.68m (21 11").
Coastal Carolinas mens track and field team had five individual champions on the second day of competition at the Western Carolina Invitational Saturday, April 1.
In field events, senior Mark Johnson won the pole vault with a season-best leap of 5.25m (172.75"), improving his NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Jones won the hammer throw with a distance of 56.76m (186 3"), also an improvement on his regional qualifying distance.
On the track, freshman Tyrone Murphy won the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 53.69. Currie captured the individual title in the 3,000m run with an 8:38.58, while senior Johnny Mitchell captured the individual title in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:55.07. Freshman Jamie McCarthy finished second in the 800m run in 1:57.68, while sophomore Blair Paul placed third in the 1500-meter run in a time of 4:05.83. Senior Johnny Mitchell won the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:55.07.
Coastal Carolinas senior Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Mens Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced today (April 5).Johnson won first place in the pole vault at the Western Carolina Invitational on Saturday with an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of 5.25 meters (17 2). The 2005 All-American, is currently ranked fifth in the nation and leading the Big South Conference in the event. Johnson will compete at the Texas Relays, Saturday April 8 while the CCU track and field team competes at the Duke Invitational Friday and Saturday April, 7-8.
