Baseball Defeats Gardner-Webb 7-4

More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – The 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (23-7, 5-2 Big South) won its fourth game in a row April 4 with a 7-4 victory over Gardner-Webb (14-12, 4-4 Big South) at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.

The Chanticleers tallied a single run in the first three innings.  Sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) opened the first with a single.  He stole second and went to third on a failed pickoff by Gardner-Webb pitcher Ben Campbell.  Noel would score on a sacrifice fly from senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).  In the second, junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) walked with one out.  Coastal Carolina loaded the bases as freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) was hit by a pitch and classmate Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) singled to right field.  Iglesias would score on an infield single from freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens).  In the third, senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) homered to left center field off Campbell, giving the Chants a 3-0 lead.

Coastal Carolina put up three runs in the fifth as Anderson belted his second home run of the day in virtually the same spot, scoring Bortnick and junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.), who both singled in the inning.  Coastal Carolina added a run in the sixth as Motter’s single to left was bobbled by Daniel Cooke, which scored Bowman.

Gardner-Webb put up two runs in the seventh on a home run to left from Jon Ahearn and a single by Matt Rizzuto that plated Kurt Fulginiti.  Freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard, Md./Riverdale Baptist) got Bubbie Spake to fly out to end the threat.

In the ninth, the Bulldogs got a Cooke single and a home run from Justin Loyd to make it 7-4 with no one out.  Junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) came in and got Fulginiti to ground out to third on a great play from Bortnick. He then struck out Ty Boyles and Rizzuto to end the game.

Redshirt junior Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) earned his fourth win of the season, going 6.1 innings and allowing just four hits and two runs with one strikeouts.  He allowed just one hit in the first six innings of work.  McCully earned his sixth save of the season with the two strikeouts.  The loss went to Campbell, who allowed two earned runs and four hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Anderson and Motter had two hits apiece while Davis was 2-for-4 in his first start as a Chanticleer.  Anderson also drove in four runs.  For Gardner-Webb, Loyd was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The final game of the three-game series will take place Sunday, April 5 at 2 p.m.  NOTE: This is a time change from the schedule on the game notes.
