Men's Track and Field Sets Two Records at Florida, Competes at Duke
DURHAM, N.C. and GAINESVILLE, FLA. -- Coastal Carolina's men's track and field team finished the first day of competition at two meets Friday, April 4 as part of the Chanticleers competed at the Pepsi Florida Relays, while others took part in the Duke Asics Invitational.
At the Pepsi Florida Relays held at the Percy Beard Track Facility in Gainesville, Fla., two new program records were set. Senior Jake Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) won the men's shot put 'B' section with a Coastal record throw of 52'7.25" (16.03m), breaking Mike Roden's mark of 51'1.75" (15.59m) that was set in 2002. On the track, the 4x200-meter relay team of junior Jarvarius Phelps (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood), freshman Ryan Edlich (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) and sophomores Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario, Canada/McGivney (Monmouth)) and Alex Levy (Columbia, S.C./Ridgeview) raced a school record time of 1:26.45 and placed seventh. The quartet broke the former record of 1:26.94 that was set by Aubrey Lemon, Phelps, Levy and Jason Lambert last season.
Also at the Pepsi Florida Relays, redshirt senior Galen Jones (Evans, Ga./Lakeside) finished seventh in the shot put 'B' section with a mark of 47'2.5" (14.39m). Junior Eric Singleton (Beaufort, S.C./Beaufort) recorded a mark of 144'6" (44.05m) in the discus 'B' section, which placed fourth. In the 110-meter hurdles, sophomore Jack Hutchison (Chester, Md./Kent Island) was 30th with a time of 14.68, while classmate Ben Wheeler ran 14.85 and finished 35th. Coastal's 4x200-meter relay 'B' team of Wheeler, sophomore Matthew Allen (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown), Hutchison and freshman Ross Graves (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) ran 1:29.28 and placed 16th.
The Chanticleers recorded six season best times or marks at the Duke Asics Invitational held at Wallace Wade Stadium. Freshman Jacob Scheuer (Blackstone, Ill./Dwight Township) registered season best times in both the 200-meters developmental and the 400-meters developmental. Scheuer ran 24.05 in the 200, a .64 improvement, and then raced 51.82 in the 400, which was a 1.23 improvement. Sophomores Steve Harmon (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) and Kasheem Clifton (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) and freshman Kiefer Whitmore (Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin) all ran season best 200-meter times in the 200 developmental section. Whitmore placed 13th and clocked 23.02, which was .07 faster than his previous season best. Harmon had a time of 23.34, a .42 improvement, while Clifton ran 24.21, which was .17 faster than his previous season best. Junior Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Ireland/North Monastery) finished fourth in the 5,000-meter 'B' section, clocking 14:52.21, a 48.52 improvement on the season.
Meanwhile, senior Blair Paul (Queenston, Ontario, Canada/Sir Winston Churchill) recorded a top-10 finish in the 5,000-meters 'C' section at the Duke Asics Invitational, placing sixth with a time of clocking 15:07.39.
The Chanticleers return to action at both meets Saturday, April 5. Collegiate field competition at the Pepsi Florida Relays starts at 11:30 a.m., while collegiate running events begin at 12 p.m. Meanwhile, both the field and track events at the Duke Asics Invitational begin at 9 a.m.
