Men's Track and Field Crowns Five Champions at Western Carolina Invitational
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Coastal Carolinas mens track and field team had four individual champions on the second day of competition at the Western Carolina Invitational Saturday, April 1.
In field events, senior Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) won the pole vault with a season-best leap of 5.25m (172.75"), improving his NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Junior Galen Jones (Evans, Ga/Lakeside) won the hammer throw with a distance of 56.76m (186 3"), also an improvement on his regional qualifying distance.
On the track, freshman Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) won the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 53.69. Junior Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) captured the individual title in the 3,000m run with an 8:38.58, while senior Johnny Mitchell (Duncan, S.C./Byrnes) captured the individual title in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:55.07. Freshman Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Ireland/North Monastery) finished second in the 800m run in 1:57.68, while sophomore Blair Paul (Queenstown, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) placed third in the 1500-meter run in a time of 4:05.83.
CCU will now travel to Durham, N.C. for the Duke Invitational Friday and Saturday, April 7-8.
