Men’s Track and Field Concludes Competition at Asics/Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s track and field team finished competition at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 31. Aubrey Lemon (Goose Creek, S.C./Stratford) set a new school record in the 100 meters with a personal best time of 10.58.   “I am very pleased with our progress we made in this meet,” head coach Jeff Jacobs said. “We needed to do well before going into two very difficult meets in the next two weeks, and I feel like we have great momentum that is preparing us for the conference championship.”   In the 400 meters, Jarvarius Phelps (Greenwood, S.C/Greenwood) took home seventh-place finishing in 48.95.   Coastal took home first through third in the 1500-meter-run. Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) was the top finisher with a time of 3:57.09 and Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Ireland/North Monastery) was right behind him at 3:57.59 for second-place. In third-place was John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) who finished in 4:02.04, a personal best.   Three Chants scored points in the 110-meter-high-hurdles. Jack Hutchinson (Chester, Md./Kent Island) ran a personal best 14.74 for a fifth-place finish. Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) finished in sixth with a time of 14.96. Kasheem Clifton (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) also set a new personal best time of 15.06 which was good enough for eighth-place.   In the 400-meter-hurdles, Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) finished second clocking in at 52.92.   In the field events, Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorepark JC)) took home second-place in the discus with a throw of 152-6. Also in the discus, Chris Abercrombie (Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin (Charleston Southern)) finished in fifth-place with a season best hurl of 146-4. Just behind Abercrombie was Jacob Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) finishing sixth with a throw of 145-11.   Coastal’s 4x100-meter relay team took home third-place with a season best time of 41.47. The team consisted of Hutchinson, Lemon, Wheeler and Alex Levy (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley (The Citadel)).    CCU took home fourth in the 4x400-meter-relay with a time of 3:18.96. The relay team was Marshawn Martin (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast (South Carolina State)), Murphy, Phelps, and Wheeler.
