Baseball's Wheeler Named Big South Pitcher of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty freshman third baseman Tyler Bream (Zelienople, Pa.) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina sophomore Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va.) has been named New Balance Pitcher of the Week for games played March 23-29, it was announced today by the League office.   Bream batted .467 (7-15) and drove in 10 runs to help Liberty to a 4-0 mark last week and move atop the Big South standings. He started the week with three hits, three RBI, two doubles and four runs in the Flames’ win at North Carolina State on Tuesday. On Friday against Presbyterian, Bream walked with the bases loaded to force in the winning run, and the next day against the Blue Hose, Bream drove in both Liberty runs in a 2-1 victory. Sunday, the freshman had his second three-hit game of the week and hit his first collegiate grand slam to complete the sweep of PC. On the week, Bream slugged .800, had a .556 on-base percentage, scored six runs and walked three times. He also has 23 RBI in his last 10 games.   Wheeler recorded Coastal Carolina’s first nine-inning no-hitter in the Gary Gilmore era, striking out 10 and retiring 28 batters in a 4-0 win over Hawai’i on Thursday, March 26. It was the first no-hitter on the islands since 1982 and the first against Hawai’i since 1998. Wheeler’s 10 strikeouts included a punchout to Jeff Van Doornum, who reached on a passed ball. Wheeler threw 118 pitches in the complete game effort, and surpassed career highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts.    Other Baseball Player of the Week Nominees: Nick Chinners (Charleston Southern), Scott Woodward (Coastal Carolina), Jesse Harmon (Presbyterian), Alex Gregory (Radford), Kevin Weidenbacher (UNC Asheville), Sam Roberts (VMI) and Eddie Tisdale (Winthrop).   Other Baseball Pitcher of the Week Nominees: Jesse Cadenhead (Charleston Southern), Steven Evans (Liberty) and Shane Pysh (Radford).
