Men’s Track Finishes Strong on Day Two of Asics/Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s track and field team concluded day two of the Asics/Winthrop Invitational on Friday, Mar. 30. Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorepark JC)) had a regionally qualifying throw in the hammer of 182-48. The throw placed him third in the meet and also third in Coastal history.


“I am happy with today’s performances,” head coach Jeff Jacobs. “We are off to a good start and I hope we can continue to do well tomorrow.”


Aubrey Lemon (Goose Creek, S.C./Stratford) recorded a personal best in the 100 meters with a time of 10.66. Lemon’s time ranked him second going into finals on Saturday and second on Coastal’s All-time list. He also posted a season best time of 21.76 in the 200 meters, which qualified him for the finals.


In the 400-meter-dash Jarvarius Phelps (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood) qualified for Saturday’s final with a personal best time of 48.73. Marshawn Martin (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast (South Carolina State)) also competed in the event finishing in 49.74.


Three Chanticleers qualified for the finals in the 110-meter-high-hurdles. Jack Hutchinson (Chester, Md./Kent Island) finished in 14.79, Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) had a time of 14.93 and Kasheem Clifton (Rock Hill. S.C./Northwestern) had a personal best time of 15.10.


Jacob Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) had a personal best toss in the shotput, throwing it 49-02 for third place.


Marcus Johnson (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson (Claflin)) finished in fourth in the long jump with a jump of 22-21.


Competition will conclude on Saturday, Mar. 31 beginning at 10 a.m.
