Men's Track and Field's Watson Breaks CCU High Jump Record, Qualifies for NCAA Regionals
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's track and field team concluded competition at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational Saturday, March 29 at Irwin Belk Track & Field Facility. Both junior Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) and redshirt freshman Jacques Watson (Sumter, S.C./Sumter) won events on Saturday, while Watson also became the seventh Chanticleer to qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships as well as set a new program record in the high jump.
Watson cleared 7'0.5" (2.15m), surpassing the NCAA regional standard of 6'10.75" (2.10m) en route to becoming the sole Coastal record holder in the high jump and the only Chant in program history to clear seven-feet in the high jump. Watson's previous best of 6'8.75" (2.05m) set two weeks ago at the CCU Invitational had tied Jerome Simpson's program record that was set in 2006.
Murphy took first in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 52.74, which was .12 faster than second-place Ernest Asante fron UNC Wilmington. Meanwhile, freshman Jacob Scheuer (Blackstone, Ill./Dwight Township) was ninth with a time of 56.93.
Sophomore Jack Hutchison (Chester, Md./Kent Island) finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.64, while classmate Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) was third in a time of 14.92. Sophomore Kasheem Clifton (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) took fifth, clocking 15.27.
Sophomore Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario, Canada/McGivney (Monmouth)) had CCU's top time in the 100-meter dash, racing 11.18 and finishing sixth. Freshman Ryan Edlich (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) ran 11.21 and finished eighth.
St. Bernard placed second in the 200 meters, clocking 21.86. Edlich was sixth with a time of 22.09, while sophomore Alex Levy (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley) finished ninth in a time of 22.19.
Junior Jarvarius Phelps (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood) ran a personal best 400-meter time of 48.07, which also ranks second all-time at Coastal.
In the 800 Invitational, freshman Travis Owens (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) clocked 1:56.31 and placed sixth and classmate Kevin Davis (Horsham, Pa./Hatsboro-Horsham) ran 1:57.62 and finished 10th.
Sophomore Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Ireland/North Monastery) had a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 Invitational and ran 4:00.46, while senior Blair Paul (Queenston, Ontario, Canada/Sir Winston Churchill) was sixth with a time of 4:02.63. Sophomore Max Hacker (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood) added an eighth-place finish with a time of 4:05.55.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Phelps, St. Bernard, Wheeler and Edlich finished fourth with a time of 41.75.
In addition to Watson's performance in the field, freshman Ross Graves (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) finished third in the high jump with a 6'6.75" (2.00m) jump. Senior Jake Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) was fourth in the shot put with a mark of 147'7" (44.99m). Redshirt sophomore Jon Wright (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mt. West) took fifth in the javelin with a toss of 170'9" (52.05m). In the pole vault, sophomore Steven Harmon (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) and Levy both cleared 13'1.5" (4.00m) and tied for eighth.
Coastal Carolina returns to action at both the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., and then Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. next weekend.
