CONWAY, S.C.-Coastal Carolinas mens and womens track and field program swept the weekly New Balance Big South Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week awards for the week ending Mar. 20. Junior pole vaulter Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./ North Myrtle Beach) and junior thrower Tamara Bryant (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle (Moorpark C.C.)) were the two honored Coastal athletes, the league office announced this afternoon, Mar. 23.
Johnson is coming off winning the pole vault at the Shamrock Invitational with an NCAA regional qualify mark of 5.10m/1608.75. Johnson, the defending NCAA East Regional champion, will compete at the Florida Relays this Saturday, Mar. 26 in the pole vault.
Bryant won two events at the Shamrock Invitational. She won the discus with a throw of 49.18m/16104" and the hammer with a throw of 55.45m/18111". Both were NCAA qualifying marks and the discus throw was a career best for Bryant. Bryant will be in Raleigh, N.C. to participate in the Raleigh Relays this weekend.
Coastal Carolinas mens and womens track and field teams will split up on the road this weekend to compete in three events. The majority of the team will be going to the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. hosted by North Carolina State. Two of CCUs distance runners, seniors Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary (Kenyatta)) and Anne Marie Moutsinga (Galati, Romania/Radu Negru) will be traveling to Palo Alto, Calif. to run at the Stanford Invitational. And two members of CCUs mens track team, Johnson and Tim Roa (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder)) are headed to Gainesville, Fla. to vault at the Florida Relays.
