CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's track and field team concluded the second day of competition at the Shamrock Invitational Friday, March 21 at the CCU Track. Two Chanticleer throwers earned berths to the NCAA East Regional Championships as CCU also posted 11 top-10 finishes in five different events and had three runners qualify for finals on Saturday.
Redshirt senior Thomas Jordan (Lebanon Valley, Pa./Cedar Crest) and senior Jake Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) both reached NCAA regional qualifying standards in the javelin and hammer throw, respectively. Competing in his first meet of the season, Jordan launched a winning throw of 212'6" (64.77m) en route to easily meeting the javelin regional standard of 202'1" (61.60m). Edelman recorded a 187'9" (57.24m) mark in the hammer throw in order to become the second Chant this season to meet the hammer throw standard of 186'4" (56.80m).
Coastal saw four top-10 finishes in the javelin alone. As Jordan won the event, junior Kyle Hoddy (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) finished second with a mark of 201' (61.28m). Sophomore Jon Wright threw a personal-best 192'8" (58.74m) and finished fourth, while freshman Zack Barr (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) was seventh with a 177'6" (54.10m) throw.
In the hammer throw, redshirt senior Galen Jones (Evans, Ga./Lakeside), who had qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the hammer throw at Battle of the Beach, placed third with a mark of 194'2" (59.18m). Meanwhile, Edelman's mark took fifth.
Sophomore Jack Hutchison (Chester, Md./Kent Island) finished eighth in the decathlon with 6,105 points, while classmate Steven Harmon (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) totaled 5,207 points and placed 10th.
On the track, the distance medley relay team of sophomore David Mead (Columbia, S.C./Ridgeview) and freshmen Mike Kimmel (Dilsburg, Pa./Northern), Travis Owens (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) and Kevin Davis (Horsham, Pa./Hatsboro-Horsham) ran 10:38.37 and placed third. In the 3,000 meters, sophomore John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) ran 8:47.72 and finished third and classmate Max Hacker (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood) was seventh with a time of 8:51.67.
Qualifying for finals on Saturday were sophomore Kasheem Clifton (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern) in the 110-meter hurdles and both sophomore Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario, Canada/McGivney (Monmouth)) and freshman Ryan Edlich (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) in the 100 meters. Clifton finished 12th in the 110-meter hurdle prelims with a time of 15.00. St. Bernard ran 10.93 and was ninth in the 100-meter prelims, while Edlich was right behind in 10th place with a time of 10.94.
The Shamrock Invitational wraps up Saturday, March 22 at the CCU Track. Due to time constraints during Friday's portion of the meet, the field events will now begin at 9 a.m. with the women's javelin. Track events are still scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
