COASTAL TRACK & FIELD COMPETES IN THE RALEIGH RELAYS:Coastal Carolinas Mens Track & Field team will compete in the Raleigh Relays Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25. The Chanticleers will compete with 75 teams including NC State, UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, Syracuse, William and Mary, Virginia, Ohio, Kent State and Big South rivals UNC Asheville, High Point, Radford, and Winthrop. Competiton begins at 10 a.m. Friday.
TOP PERFORMERS IN THE RALEIGH RELAYS: Coastal will be highlighted by Mark Johnson in the pole vault, Galen Jones in the hammer, Thomas Jordan in the javelin, Jamie McCarthy, Doug Currie, and Nelson Oliveira in the 5000 meter run, Tyrone Murphy in the hurdles, and Tommy Sugishita in the discus.
SHAMROCK INVITATIONAL RESULTS: Coastal Carolinas mens track and field had several solid performance in the first day of the CCU Shamrock Invitational Friday, March 17.
Sophomore Thomas Jordan in the javelin with a throw of 64.33m (2111"), while freshman teammate Kyle Hoddy placed second with a toss of 59.09m (19310"). Junior Galen Jones posted his second consecutive personal best in the hammer with a throw of 56.48m (1854"), finishing third in the event and improving his NCAA Regional qualifying mark. This throw also placed him in the second spot on CCUs all-time records. Junior Tommy Sugishita threw 54.04m (1774") to finish fourth in the event, while sophomore Jacob Edelman placed eighth with a personal-best toss of 49.94m (16310"), the sixth-best throw in Coastal history and four meters longer than his previous best.
Coastal Carolinas mens track and field set two new school records, both by freshmen, and crowned two champions and four runners-up on the final day of the CCU Shamrock Invitational, Saturday, March 18.
Freshman Tyrone Murphy finished first in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, posting a personal-best and school-record time of 52.77. Freshman Aubrey Lemon won the 200 meters with a season best of 21.79, the fourth-best time in CCU history. He also finished third in the 100 meters in a time of 10.87.
In his first collegiate competition, Jerome Simpson posted a new high jump school record, clearing 2.03m (6 8"). He also placed fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 22:14. Senior Mark Johnson finished second in the pole vault with a leap 5.05m (16 6.75"). Sophomore Jim Chmelik was the runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.08, while Lemon, sophomore Daniel Stokes, freshman Jarvarius Phelps and freshman Jonathan Jeffries posted a 42.04 in the 4x100-meter relay to place second.
Junior Tommy Sugishita had a personal best of 49.67 in the mens discus, the second-best throw all-time at CCU, while sophomore Art Hill and Jacob Edelman posted personal season bests in the discus of 44.10m (1448") and 43.90m (1440"), respectively. The distance corps also had a good outing as freshman Jamie McCarthy, senior Nelson Oliveira and junior Doug Currie went 3-4-5, respectively, in the mens mile.
