More Information:

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The 10th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (18-2, 3-0 Big South) received seven strong innings from sophomore Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) and put up five runs in the third inning in its 7-2 win over Winthrop (12-7, 3-1 Big South) March 20 in Rock Hill, S.C.   After leaving the bases loaded in the second, the Chants broke through with five runs in the third. Redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) led off the inning with a triple to the right field gap. He would score on a groundout from junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.). Coastal Carolina then used some two-out magic to put up four runs. Junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) singled and then went to second on a walk to freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby). Motter then brought in a run with a single to left. Noel loaded the bases with a walk. Woodward drove in a pair with a single to right. The final run of the inning came on a double steal as Noel stole home.   In the top of the fourth, Gilmore doubled to open the frame, moved to second on a groundout from senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) and scored on a sacrifice bunt from Rice, making it 6-0 Chanticleers. Winthrop cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Cam Walters’ single scored Eddie Tisdale and Kevin Nolan.   The Chants added insurance in the ninth, as Noel singled to score Motter, who reached on a throwing error by Garrett Koster. Winthrop loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but freshman Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) struck out Eddie Rohan to end the game.   Wheeler allowed seven hits and two runs with four strikeouts to improve his record to 4-0 on the year. Meo pitched the final two innings and had three strikeouts. The loss went to Patterozzi, who gave up six runs and six hits with seven walks and three strikeouts.   Gilmore went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs scored.  Noel had two hits, while Woodward and Rice drove in a pair.
For Winthrop, Nolan and Murrian had two hits apiece. The two teams combined to strand 21 runners on base.   Coastal Carolina and Winthrop continue its Big South series Saturday, March 21 at 4 p.m.
