Baseball Signee Matz Named to the Rawlings and Perfect Game USA Preseason All-America First Team

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University baseball recruit Steven Matz (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) has been named to the Rawlings and Perfect Game USA Preseason All-America First Team, it was announced recently. Matz is part of the 2009-10 recruiting class for the Chanticleers that feature six student-athletes.   Matz is one of 19 pitchers from around the country that made the list and the only player from New York on the 50-man team.   Here is a player-by-player look at the Chanticleer 2009-10 class that signed National Letters-of-Intent in the fall.   JOSH CONWAY – 6-1 – 165 – RHP/OF – Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg Was a First Team All-Washington County selection his junior season at Smithsburg High School in Smithsburg, Md… Hit .462 with nine doubles and 23 runs-batted-in for the Leopards… Also had a 3.39 earned-run average with 44 strikeouts… Hit .444 his sophomore season with four home runs and 26 RBI… Also was a First Team All-Washington County selection his sophomore season… Played summer baseball for the Frederick Hustlers… Was named to the All-Tournament Team of the AAU National Championship at the Disney’s Wide World of Sports… Also plays football and basketball at Smithsburg, as he helped the football team to a Monocacy Valley Athletic League championship his senior season.   STEFAN DEL PINO – LHP – Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman Was named to the 2009 All-National Team by the Baseball Clearinghouse… Is returning to the Cavaliers following an injury his junior season… Is part of a team at Dorman who was ranked 36th in the country by Perfect Game to open the season.   MATT LANEY – 6-4 – 235 – LHP – Chester, Va./LC Bird (Miami-Dade C.C.) Selected to represent the Southern Conference in the Florida Junior College Sophomore Showcase in Winter Haven, Fla… Played at East Carolina University his freshman season, making nine appearances with a 5.28 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 15.1 innings pitched… Was a four-year letterwinner at LC Bird High School in Chester, Va… Had a 2.02 ERA as a senior… Earned Second Team All-District honors his junior season, tossing four complete games in seven starts…Was invited to participate in the Commonwealth Games of Virginia and competed in the U17-18 World Championships in Atlanta in 2006.   STEVEN MATZ – 6-2 – 190 – LHP – Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville Was ranked as the top prospect in New York by Perfect Game… Also was ranked as the 44th-best prospect nationally by the web site… Was an All-League I honoree his junior season after striking out 36 in 18 innings and having a 1.04 earned-run average… Also hit .404 with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs and 32 RBI… Played on the New York Yankees 2008 Area Code Team… He was ranked as a top-10 pitcher by Baseball America in that event.   LUKE SCHLECHTE – 6-1 – 200 – OF – Imperial, Mo./Windsor (Jefferson College) As a senior at Windsor High School in 2007, was named to the First Team All-Jefferson County Conference as well as an All-St. Louis Metro Area honoree… Hit .330 for the Owls… Also was named to the KREI/KTJI/KJFF Dream Team… Was a Wendy’s Heisman Award Nominee… Was the Jefferson County Most Valuable Player and a First Team All-Conference and All-St. Louis Metro his junior season… Hit .531 with 20 doubles and three home runs… He also played football for Windsor, earning All-Mississippi Area honors as a defensive back for three seasons.   BOBBY WATFORD – 6-4 – 175 – RHP – Conway, S.C./Conway Was named to the “Toast of the Coast” by the Myrtle Beach Sun News after his junior season at Conway High School in Conway, S.C… Was an All-State and All-Region team member for the Tigers his junior season… Was an All-State selection by the High School Sports Report and Diamond Prospects… Also was an All-Academic selection by Diamond Prospects.
