CONWAY, S.C. Coastal Carolinas men's track and field team had several outstanding performances and one regional qualifying score at the Shamrock Invitational on March 18-19.
For the Coastals mens team senior Kendall White (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast) and junior Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) captured individual victories in the 400m (53.77) and the pole vault (5.10m/1608.75), respectively.The pole vault by Johnson is an NCAA Outdoor Qualifying mark.
Freshman Tim Roa (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) also had a strong meet for Coastal mens team placing second in the pole vault (4.65m/153") and third in the triple jump (13.92m/458").
Sophomore Chasity Johnson (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) in her first outdoor meet of the season set a new school. conference and personal record in the triple jump for the women's program. Her meet winning mark of 13.01m/168.50" also was an NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Regional Qualifying mark as well.
Also reaching qualifying status for CCUs womens track and field team was junior throwers Tamara Bryant (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle (Moorpark C.C.)) and Brittany Reid (McKinney, Texas/Rowlett (Coffeyville JC)). Both set personal records and reached qualifying status with their discus throws of 49.18m/1614" and 48.05m/1578", respectively. Besides winning the discus, Bryant also won the hammer throw, 55.45m/18111". The hammer throw was a personal record for Bryant and her second NCAA qualifying throw in as many events in the competition.
Sophomore Dana Sizemore (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) also achieved NCAA Qualifying status with her throw of 43.98m/1443" in the javelin, which placed second at the competition.
Fellow thrower Sylvia Galarza (Millville, N.J./Millville) captured an individual victory with her shot put throw of 13.49m/443.25". Other Lady Chanticleers with individual victories include freshman Christina Mohr (Ulmen,Germany/Geschwister-Schol-Gymnasium) in the 5,000m(17:12.52) and junior Ebony Brown (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) in the 400m hurdles (1:03.01).
Coastal Carolina had a strong showing from its relay teams. The Coastal Carolina B relay team placed third in the mens 4x100m (42.71) and the mens 4x400m (3:19.56). The womens A relay team placed third in the 4x400m (3:58.65).
The Coastal Carolina track and field program will next be in action on Mar. 25-26 as it travels to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Raleigh Relays on the campus of North Carolina State. Also on the same date some members of the program will compete in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford University.
