Baseball's Win Streak Snapped in a 3-0 Loss to the College of Charleston

More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – The 10th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (17-2) saw its 14th-game winning streak snapped by the College of Charleston (14-3) 3-0 March 18 in Conway, S.C. It also was the first time the Chanticleers have been shutout since March 7, 2007 in a 4-0 loss to Clemson.   The College of Charleston scored a run in the first off freshman Brad Goldberg (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood). Clay McCord walked to open the game. He stole second and moved to third on a Joey Bergman single. McCord would score on a one-out single from Ryan Daniels.    That would be the only run-batted-in by the Cougars all night. In the fifth, McCord would single to open the inning, stole second and scored on back-to-back balks from sophomore Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek). Then in the sixth, Mike Hentz led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch from freshman TJ Swank (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge).   Coastal Carolina got the leadoff runner on base in five of the nine innings, but could not get the run-scoring base hit. The Chants did not get a runner past second base, as the pitching tandem of Nick Osterman and Aaron Bouronich struck out nine batters and allowed just four hits. Coastal Carolina had a runner at second in the first and third innings with one out but two foul outs in the first and two strikeouts in the third thwarted Chanticleer rallies.    Osterman earned the win on the mound for the Cougars. He struck out eight in 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and walking four. Bouronich earned the save as he did not allow a hit in 2.1 innings. The loss went to Goldberg, who gave up a run and four hits while striking out a batter in three innings. Freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard’s, Md./Riverdale Baptist) struck out three batters in 2.1 innings of relief.   For the College of Charleston, Bergman, Brandon Sizemore, Daniels and Hentz had two hits apiece. Junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) had Coastal Carolina’s only extra-base hit with a double in the second.   Coastal Carolina will jump back into Big South action Friday, March 20 at Winthrop. First pitch will be at 6 p.m., at the Winthrop Ballpark. The game will be broadcast on THE TEAM 93.9 FM in Myrtle Beach.
