More Information:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 10th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (17-1) extended its winning streak to 14 games in an exciting 5-2 win over Tennessee (8-9) March 17 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. The Chants won all four games against Southeastern Conference opponents this season.    The Chanticleers got out of a jam in the first. P.J. Polk doubled to open the inning, and then moved to third on a failed pickoff by redshirt junior Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe). Fleet would bear down and strike out Josh Liles. He then threw out Polk at home on a fielder’s choice.  Kentrail Davis would move to second on a wild pitch, but Fleet got Cody Hawn to ground out to end the threat.   Junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) belted a two-out, 3-2 pitch by Bryan Morgado over the wall in left field to give the Chants a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Fleet got the first two Vols out in the fourth, but gave up back-to-back singles to Cody Hawn and Blake Forsythe. He then walked Jeff Lockwood to load the bases, but would get out of the jam by inducing Tyler Horne into a fielder’s choice.   Tennessee tied the score in the bottom of the sixth as Hawn hit his eighth home run of the season over the wall in right field, tying the game at one.    Coastal Carolina started the seventh inning on a doubles fest, as redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia), senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) and junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.) all doubled to open the inning. Gilmore scored on Rice’s double, while Anderson came home on a sacrifice fly from freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby), making it 3-1 Chants. Tennessee used a Horne home run to right to cut the Coastal Carolina lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh.    In the bottom of the eighth, Tennessee’s P.J. Polk reached on an infield single to open the inning. Josh Liles sacrificed him to second base, but redshirt freshman Keith Hessler (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) came in and got Davis and Hawn to fly out to keep it a one-run game.   Anderson opened the ninth with a monstrous shot over the batters eye in center field, making it 4-2 Chanticleers. Freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) then singled to right and the ball went past Liles in right, scoring junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s), who singled a batter earlier.   Tennessee opened the ninth with two base runners as Blake Forsyth singled and Jeff Lockwood walked to open the inning. Horne hit a ball in the hole as shortstop, but Motter made a terrific play to get a fielder’s choice at third base. Junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) then induced Cody Grisham into a double play to end the game.   Fleet earned the win and improved to 3-0 on the year. He struck out six in six innings of work, allowing just five hits and one earned run. The Chanticleers used five pitchers in the game as McCully came on in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. The loss was tagged to Matt Ramsey in relief. He allowed two runs and three hits in 2.1 innings. Bryan Morgado struck out seven in four innings for the Vols.   Anderson and Iglesias had a home run and two hits apiece, while Forsythe was 3-for-4 for Tennessee.   Coastal Carolina returns to Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field for a brief one-game homestand against the College of Charleston. Game time is at 5 p.m.
