Men’s Track and Field Finish Strong at Shamrock Invitational

CONWAY, S.C.—The Coastal Carolina University men’s track and field team finished competition in the Shamrock Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 17. Tyrone Murphy set a new school record in the 400-meter-hurdles.   In the hurdles, Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) finished the 400-meter-hurdles in second place with a school record and personal best time of 52.51. Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) also ran a personal best time in the 110-meter-high-hurdles finishing in 14.98 for third-place which ranks him third on CCU’s All-time list.   "We had some very good results this weekend, and a very productive week of practice during the spring break," Head Coach Jeff Jacobs said. "It was a good experience for our team, who is still very young, to go up against some of the quality Division I teams like Notre Dame, Kentucky, East Carolina and Liberty. We are headed in a positive direction toward defending our Big South title. Tyrone Murphy had an outstanding performance today in the 400-meter-hurdles."
  Marshawn Martin (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast S.C. State)) finished second and ran a season-best time of 1:56.10 in the 800 meters. Martin was also part of Coastal’s third-place 4x400-meter-relay team that finished in a time of 3:18.37. (Martin, Lemon, Phelps, Lambert)   Coastal had five finish top ten finishers in the 1500-meter-run. In second was Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) with a time of 3:55.05. In fourth was Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Cork, Co., Ireland/North Monastery) in 3:56.53. John Heron (Manlius N.Y./Fayettville-Manlius) finished in sixth in 4:02.66 with Blair Paul (Queenston, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) behind him in seventh in 4:03.85 . Max Hacker took home a ninth-place finish with a time of 4:06.13.   Jake Morris (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) finished the 3000-meter-steeplechase in fourth in 9:42.74 a personal best time for Morris.   In the field events, Coastal had a fifth and sixth finish in the shot put. Jacob Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) was fifth (14.35 m) and Chris Abercrombie (Mauldin, S.C./Mauldin (Charleston Southern)) was sixth (14.27m).   Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorepark JC)) threw the discus 46.67 meters for a ninth place finish.   In jumps, Boyce Bivings (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) was seventh in the long jump (6.30 m).   Up next, the CCU men will head to Winston-Salem, N.C. on Mar. 23-24 to compete in the Wake Forest Relays.
