More Information:

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (16-1, 2-0 Big South) won its 13th-consecutive game with a 12-2 victory over UNC Asheville (3-13, 1-4 Big South) March 16 in Asheville, N.C. The Chanticleers and Bulldogs played just two games in the series as the second half of the doubleheader was cancelled to due playing conditions and travel schedule.   The Chanticleers opened the game with a bang, as sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) hit an opposite-field home run, his first of the season. Just two batters later, redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) hit a home run over the high wall in right field, making it 2-0 Chants.    UNC Asheville cut the Coastal Carolina lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Schumer led off the inning with a single through the left side. With one out, Beau Zinman singled to right field to put runners on first and second. Danny Baatz’s grounder to second base put runners on the corners and Derrick Hopkins brought in Schumer with a single to center field.     The Chanticleer top of the fifth lasted about two hours, most of that due to a 1:30 rain delay. The inning started with a walk to Woodward. He stole second and scored on a single from senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor). Bortnick then stole second and scored on a single from Gilmore through the right side. Back-to-back doubles from junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) and freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) brought in two more runs, making it 6-1 Chanticleers.   The Chants added insurance with four runs in seventh inning. Bowman started the inning with a single. Freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) and sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) then had back-to-back bunt singles. Noel’s was followed by a throwing error from UNCA’s Cody Buch, allowing two runs to score. Woodward then walked and would score on a single from freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard’s, Md./Riverdale Baptist). The final run of the inning cam on a double play ground ball from redshirt sophomore Dustin King (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest), scoring Winegardner.   The Chanticleers scored their final two runs in the top of the ninth as Woodward scored on a wild pitch and redshirt sophomore Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) doubled in a run.   The win went to senior Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill), who improved to 2-1 on the year. Gagg struck out four and allowed four hits and a run in five innings pitched. Junior Caleb Cuevas (Fletcher, N.C./Louisburg J.C.) pitched three innings, striking out three and giving up two hits. The loss was tagged to Michael Bogaert, who gave up six runs and nine hits in 4.2 innings.   Bowman had a career high four hits in the win, while Gilmore was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Woodward was 1-for-3 with four runs scored. For the Bulldogs, Schumer and Zinman had two hits apiece.   Coastal Carolina heads to Knoxville, Tenn., to face the University of Tennessee Tuesday, March 17 at 4 p.m.
