CONWAY, S.C.-Coastal Carolinas mens and womens track and field teams will host their second outdoor meet of the season, the Shamrock Invitational, this weekend, Mar. 18-19, at the Coastal Carolina Track and Field facility starting at 2 p.m., Friday afternoon.
The two-day event will kick off at 2 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 18 with the mens hammer throw. The second day of action is set to begin at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Mar. 19 with the discus and the 5,000m. The day is expected to conclude at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 19. with the 4x400 meter relay.
The CCU throwers had another strong meet at the CCU Invitational last weekend. Junior Tamara Bryant (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle (Moorpark C.C.) won the womens discus (48.50m/1591") and placed second in womens hammer throw (55.55m/1823"). Both were personal records for Bryant with the discus thow ranking as the second best mark in school history. Also throwing well was freshman Sylvia Galarza (Millville, N.J./Millville) who finished second in the shotput (13.28m437") and discus (44.90m/1474"), Senior Anne Marie Moutsinga (Galati, Romania/Radu Negru) and freshman DeMiracle Washington (Irmo, S.C./Irmo) are both coming off individual victories and will lead the CCU womens team in the 5,000m and triple jump, respectively.
The Lady Chanticleers will also have sophomore Chasity Johnson (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) competing this weekend. Johnson was in Fayetteville, Ark., last weekend where she placed eighth at the 2005 NCAA Indoor National Championship in the triple jump with a new school and conference record of 13.20m/433.75". She became only the third female Coastal athlete to achieve All-American status with the mark.
Senior Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary (Kenyatta)) will lead the Coastal men in the competition after winning the 5,000m (14:38.48) last weekend. Others to record individual victories for the Chanticleers mens team last weekend include junior Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) in the pole vault and freshman Jim Chmelik (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) in the 110m hurdles. Chmeliks mark of 14.89 was a new personal and school record. Coastals 4x400 Relay A Team ((Paul Scheuer (Blackstone, Ill./Dwight Township), Nick Maxwell (Englishtown, N.J./Notre Dame), Kendall White (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast), and Dustin Cowan (Greenville, S.C./Greenville Tech Charter (Western Carolina)) won its event with a time of 3:17.02.
The Coastal Carolina track and field program will next be in action on Mar. 25-26 as it travels to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Raleigh Relays on the campus of North Carolina State. Also on the same date some members of the program will compete in the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford University.
