Baseball Opens Big South Play with a 9-4 Win over UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The 12th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (15-1, 1-0 Big South) opened its Big South schedule with a 9-4 win over UNC Asheville (3-12, 1-3 Big South) March 15 in Asheville, N.C. Coastal Carolina is now off to its best start in program history after 16 games and extended its winning streak to 12 games.   The Chanticleers came out and scored two runs in the top half of the first inning. Sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) led off the game with a single through the right side. He moved to third on a double by senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and scored on a groundout from redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia). Senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) then brought in Bortnick with a single to left, making it 2-0 Chants.   Coastal Carolina got out of a big jam in the bottom of the second, as sophomore Cody Wheeler (Spotyslvania, Va./Spotsylvania) gave up a single to Beau Zinman to lead off the inning and a one-out double from Cody Buch. Wheeler would get Danny Baatz to ground back to him and then he struck out Austin Graham to end the threat.   The Chants added two more runs in the fourth. Anderson led off with a single to left. He would move to second as junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.) reached on a bunt single. Junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) then moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) brought in the first run on a sacrifice fly to left field and classmate Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) brought in a run with a double off the wall in left field.   In the top of the fifth, Anderson continued his hot hitting, scoring Gilmore on a single to center field, making it 5-0 Chanticleers. The Bulldogs got that run back in the bottom of the frame. Baatz led off the inning with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Graham and scored on a single from Justin Lurie.   The Bulldogs scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning. Redshirt senior Kent Altman (Conway, S.C./Conway) gave up back-to-back doubles to Reed Kreiser and Beau Zinman to open the inning. Freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard’s, Md./Riverdale Baptist) then came in and got two quick outs, but Baatz reached on a Woodward error, scoring two runs. Pinch hitter Derrick Hopkins then singled home a run to make it 5-4 Chanticleers. Winegardner got Justin Schumer to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the Bulldog threat.   Woodward walked to open the Coastal Carolina seventh. He went to third on a double from Bortnick and scored on a shallow sacrifice fly by Gilmore, making it 6-4 Chanticleers.   The Chanticleers added three runs of insurance in the ninth inning. Noel doubled with one out. He moved to third on a groundout by Woodward. Coastal Carolina would then load the bases as Bortnick was hit by a pitch and Gilmore walked. Anderson would drive in a run on an infield single, then Rice hit a big two-run double, making it 9-4 Chants.   Wheeler earned his third win on the mound, striking out four and allowing one run and five hits in five innings. Freshman T.J. Swank (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) earned his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings. The loss was tagged to Taylor Wohlwend, who gave up six runs and 10 hits in 6.2 innings.   Anderson was 4-for-5 with three RBI for the Chants, while Bortnick and Noel had two hits apiece. For UNC Asheville, Zinman was 3-for-4.   The two teams wrap up the series Monday, March 16 with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
