Men's Track and Field Finishes Competition at CCU Invitational
CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's track and field team concluded competition at the CCU Invitational Saturday, March 15 at the CCU Track. In the two-day meet, the Chanticleers registered 11 top-five performances, won two events, tied one school record and saw another fall in perhaps the largest meet Coastal has ever hosted.
"We had a couple school records today and some other very good results," Head Coach Jeff Jacobs said. "I am pleased with the way the team is progressing. I believe we also set a record for the largest track meet ever held here at Coastal. We had over 1,200 athletes representing 33 teams."
Highlighting the meet was sophomore Jack Hutchison's (Chester Md./Kent Island) win in the 110-meter hurdles, setting a new school record in the process. Hutchison won the race in a time of 14.50, breaking the old record of 14.54 that was set by classmate Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) earlier this season at Battle of the Beach IV. Meanwhile, Wheeler finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at the CCU Invitational, clocking 14.76.
Coastal's school-record tying mark came in the high jump as redshirt freshman Jacques Watson (Sumter, S.C./Sumter) cleared 6'8.75" (2.05m), equaling the school record set by Jerome Simpson in 2006. Watson's mark placed fifth at the CCU Invitational.
The Chanticleers won the 4x100-meter relay as the team of redshirt senior Dee Stokes (Bluffton, S.C./Hilton Head (Savannah State)), freshman Ryan Edlich (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan), junior Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) and sophomore Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario, Canada/McGivney (Monmouth)) clocked 41.88.
In the running events, Coastal had top-five finishes from senior Blair Paul (Queenston, Ontario, Canada/Sir Winston Churchill) and Murphy. Paul took fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:47.53. Murphy set a new personal-best in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.60, which ranks fourth all-time at Coastal.
The Chants had a total of six top-five finishes in the field events, including Watson's fifth-place finish in the high jump. Edlich was the top collegiate finisher in the long jump, placing second with a mark of 22'7" (6.88m). Junior Eric Singleton (Beaufort, S.C./Beaufort) placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 154'3" (47.01m). On Friday, Coastal saw senior Jake Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) take fifth in the hammer throw (182'7"/55.66m) and junior Kyle Hoddy (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) and sophomore Jon Wright each recorded top-five performances in the javelin. Hoddy was third with a mark of 193'8" (59.02m) and Wright took fifth with a mark of 189'4" (57.70m).
Coastal Carolina returns to action when the Chants host the three-day Shamrock Invitational March 20-22 at the CCU Track.
