More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – The 12th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (14-1) tied the school record for best start in a season after a 4-2 defeat of USC Upstate (5-7) March 11 at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field in Conway, S.C.   Coastal Carolina scored two runs in the first. Senior Tyler Borntick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was hit by a pitch with one out. He moved to second on a walk to redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia). USC Upstate starter Austin Moyer loaded the bases with a walk to senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll). Junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.) brought home a pair of runs with a single up the middle.   The Chants looked to have a golden opportunity to score in the second as a single from junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) and walks to freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) and sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) loaded the bases. Ryan Fern got out of the jam by striking out sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) and Bortnick and getting Gilmore to fly out. Upstate came back with a run in the third as Phillip Morgan doubled to open the frame. He went to third on an Eric Guillen single and scored on a two-out single from Jimmy Tanner.    The Chants were locked in a pitcher’s duel for the second straight day, but Coastal Carolina broke through for two runs in the eighth. After Phillip Myers, who threw 5.2 stellar innings, got the first two Chants to ground out, he allowed a double to Motter. Myers walked Noel, but gave up an RBI single to Woodward, making it 3-1 Coastal Carolina. The Chants would load the bases and Gilmore walked to make it a three-run Coastal Carolina advantage.   USC Upstate got the leadoff runner on in the ninth as pinch hitter Jacob Breen singled up the middle. Junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) came in and gave up a double to Morgan, putting runners on second and third. Tommy Shovlin grounded out to short on a nice play by Motter, making it 4-2. McCully would then get Guillen to fly out and Blake Green to strike out to give the Chants its 11th-straight win.   Redshirt junior Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) earned the win for the Chanticleers, his second of the season. He allowed just one run and six hits with two strikeouts. The Chants used six pitchers in the game as freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard’s, Md./Riverdale Baptist) struck out a pair of Spartans. McCully earned his fourth save, pitching an inning of work with a strikeout.   The loss went to Moyer, who gave up the two runs in the first. Myers allowed just three hits and two runs in 5.2 innings.   Woodward was 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate, while USC Upstate’s Tanner was 3-for-4.  The Chants also left 12 men on base in the win.   The 14-1 start matches last season’s mark after 15 games.   Coastal Carolina opens Big South play Friday, March 13 at UNC Asheville. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
