Men's Track and Field Opens CCU Invitational With Two Event Wins
CONWAY, SC - The Coastal Carolina men's track and field team crowned a pair of champions on the opening day of the CCU Invitational, Mar. 10. The Chanticleer track teams are hosting the two-day event.
In the men's 10,000 meters, senior Johnny Mitchell (Duncan, S.C./Byrnes) posted a personal-best time of 33:07.82 to win the event by over 14 seconds. The other event champion was freshman Kyle Hoddy (Griswold, C.T./Griswold), who won his first collegiate javelin competition with a throw of 59.21m (194'3"), the third-best performance in CCU history.
In the hammer throw, Coastal had two finish in the fop four, as junior Galen Jones (Evans, Ga/Lakeside) finished third with a personal-best throw of 56.28m (184'8"). It was the second-best throw in Coastal history and good enough to qualify Jones for the NCAA East Regional. Junior Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorpark JC)) placed fourth with a toss of 54.07m (177'5"), also a personal best and the fourth-longest throw in school annals. Sophomore Jacob Edelman (Dryden, NY/Dryden) also had a personal best in the event, throwing 45.78m (150'2") to place 10th.
The two-day event will wrap up tomorrow on the campus of Coastal.
