Baseball Breaks School Record for Runs in 36-3 Win over Stony Brook

More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – The 14th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (12-1) set a school record for runs in a game with a 36-3 rout of Stony Brook (2-6) March 8 at the Caravelle Resort Classic in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers put up 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back in winning its ninth-straight game.   The old school record for runs in a game was 29, set on March 25, 1982 in a 29-1 win over Voorhees. The game also set the record for run margin in a game and is the highest offensive output in Division I college baseball this season.

Coastal Carolina also scored eight runs in the third and 10 runs in the fourth in the win over the Seawolves.   Coastal Carolina had 18 extra-base hits on the day while 13 players had at least one hit in the win over the Seawolves. With most of the starters out by the third inning, it was a chance for the underclassmen to show their skills. Redshirt sophomore Dustin King (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest) had a monster game, going 4-for-6 with six RBI and four runs scored. This included a grand slam in the fourth inning. Freshman Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI. Redshirt freshman Rich Witten (Danville, Ky./Danville) scored four runs and was 2-for-3, while classmate Tucker Frawley (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) was 3-for-4 with two RBI. King joined senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll), freshman Dan Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby), redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) and sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) in hitting home runs on the day.   Freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) was the only Chanticleer position player to play all nine innings. He went 5-for-7 with five runs scored and three RBI.   Not to be overshadowed, the Coastal Carolina pitching staff allowed just eight hits and three runs on the day. Junior Caleb Cuevas (Fletcher, N.C./Louisburg J.C.) pitched the first three innings, allowing three hits and no runs with three strikeouts. Freshman Brad Goldberg (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) earned the win for the Chants in relief, striking out a pair in two innings pitched. Sophomore Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek), redshirt sophomore Jim Birmingham (Pine Hill, N.J./Penn) and freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard’s, Md./Riverdale Baptist) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Winegardner also went 2-for-5 with two RBI at the plate.   Brian Witkowski and Keith Fier had two hits apiece to lead Stony Brook.   Coastal Carolina continues its homestand Tuesday, March 10 against Creighton. Game time is at 4 p.m.
