NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's track and field team competed at the extremely windy Buccaneer Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern Saturday, March 8 at the Bagwell-Settle Track. The Chanticleers captured titles in four events and added the meet's top collegiate finisher in another.
Coastal won both the 4x100-meter and the 4x400-meter relays. The 4x100 relay team of sophomore Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg), freshman Ryan Edlich (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan), junior Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) and sophomore Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario, Canada/McGivney (Monmouth)) ran a winning-time of 41.80. Meanwhile, the 4x400-meter relay team of Murphy, junior Jarvarius Phelps (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood), freshman Ross Graves (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) and sophomore Jack Hutchison (Chester, Md./Kent Island) race 3:20.66 en route to placing first.
The Chants' took home first place in both the shot put and the high jump, while recording the top collegiate placing in the hammer throw. Senior Jake Edelman (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) won the shot put with a 49'11.25" (15.22m) throw. Redshirt freshman Jacques Watson (Sumter, S.C./Sumter) finished first in the high jump by clearing 6'2" (1.88m). Redshirt senior Galen Jones (Evans, Ga./Lakeside) had the top collegiate mark in the hammer throw with a 179'6" (54.71m) launch.
Coastal returns to action next weekend when the Chants host the two-day CCU Invitational at the CCU Track. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. with the hammer and javelin Friday, March 14.
