Conway, S.C. The Coastal Carolina men's track and field squad will compete at home for the first time this season hosting the CCU Invitational. Coastal will host a field of 21 teams with events starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 9 and 10 a.m. on Saturday, Mar. 10.
"We should get some great competition this weekend," head coach Jeff Jacobs said. "Which includes our conference rivals Liberty and Radford. Hopefully we will build on the momentum from our win last week at the Battle of the Beach."
Leading the way for the Chanticleer men in the sprints wil be Aubrey Lemon (Goose Creek, S.C./Stratford) who is the current school record holder in the 200 meter dash (21.34). Lemon will also run in the 100 meters.
In the distance events, Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Saria Northern) will lead the field for CCU. Currie won the 5,000 at last year's event. He also finished first in both the 1500-meter-run and the 3000 meters last week at the Battle of the Beach meet.
School record holder Jim Chemlik (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) will compete in the 110-high-hurdles along with Ben Wheeler (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg), who won the event last week.
In the field events, Coastal will have athetes competing in all events with the exception of the triple jump. Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorpark JC)) won both the discuss and hammmer throw last week, will compete in both events. Throwing the javelin for Coastal will be Kyle Hoddy (Griswold, Conn./Griswold). Hoddy won this event last year at the CCU Invite and also last week at the Battle of the Beach in Wilmington, N.C.
