CONWAY, S.C.- Coastal Carolinas mens and womens track and field team will host its first outdoor meet of the season, the CCU Invitational, this weekend, Mar. 11-12, at the Coastal Carolina Track and Field facility starting at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.
The two-day event will kick off at 2 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 11 with the mens hammer throw. The second day of action is set to be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Mar. 12 with the discus and the 5,000m. The day is expected to conclude at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 12. with the 4x400 meter relay.
CCU throwers had a strong first meet of the season at the Battle of the Beach at University of North
Carolina- Wilmington. Junior Tamara Bryant (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle (Moorpark C.C.) won both the womens discus (46.54m/1528") and womens hammer throw (52.17m/1711.50"). The discus throw was the second best throw in school history. Also throwing well was fellow junior Brittany Reid (McKinney, Texas/Rowlett (Coffeyville JC) who won the shot put (13.88m/45.6.50"), which was also the second best shot put throw in the record book. Seniors Anne Marie Moutsinga (Galati, Romania/Radu Negru) and Kim Nemergut (Youngstown, Ohio/South Range) are both coming off individual victories at Wilmington and will lead the CCU womens runners in the 3,000m and 1,500m, respectively.
Senior Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary (Kenyatta)) will lead the Coastal men in the competition after winning both the 3,000m (8:47.04) and the 3,000m steeplechase (9:13.47) last weekend. Others to record individual victories for the Chanticleers men in Wilmington include juniors Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) (pole vault), Marcus Johnson (Orangeburg, S.C./Orangeburg-Wilkinson (Claftin)) (triple jump and long jump) and Taylor McFadden (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) (high jump) and sophomore Thomas Jordan (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) (javelin).
Among the schools expected to compete in this meet against CCU on the Division I level are UNC-W, Radford, The Citadel, Hampton (men), Campbell, Towson (women), and American. The Non-Division I schools expected to compete include Lees-McRae, Concord, Slippery Rock, UNC-Pembroke and Malone.
The Coastal Carolina track and field program will next be in action on Mar. 18-19 as it hosts the Shamrock Invitational.
