Baseball Defeats IPFW 14-2
CONWAY, S.C. – The 14th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (8-1) scored runs in six of its eight innings in a 14-2 win over IPFW (1-3) March 5 in Conway, S.C.
IPFW got on the board in the first on an RBI single from Shaun VanDreissche, but the Chants answered with a run on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) that scored sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell). IPFW had eight pitchers on the night and the second pitcher, A.J. Risedorph allowed four runs in the second, but just one was earned. Junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.) led off the inning with a single. He moved to second on a passed ball and went to third when freshman Taylor Motter’s (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) liner to left was dropped by the Mastodons’ Quentin Brown. Senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) scored Rice with a single to give the Chants the 2-1 lead. Woodward brought home a run with a double and Bortnick scored on a passed ball. Sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) brought the inning’s final run on a sacrifice fly that scored Woodward.
Rice brought the third inning’s first run on a sacrifice fly that scored Iglesias. Freshman Dan Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) brought in a run with a sacrifice fly that scored Anderson. IPFW scored its final run in the fourth after VanDreissche tripled and scored on a groundout by Mark Carden. Coastal Carolina got the run back on a double steal by Noel and Woodward.
Coastal Carolina scored three runs in the sixth. Freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard’s, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and Woodward hit back-to-back singles that scored Motter. Noel was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Winegardner scored on a wild pitch. Woodward would then score on a wild pitch that made it 11-2. Coastal Carolina scored three in the eighth inning, highlighted by a single by redshirt sophomore Dustin King (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest) that scored Woodward and a two-run double from redshirt freshman Rich Witten (Danville, Ky./Danville) that brought in King and redshirt sophomore Keith Hardwick (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest).
Redshirt freshman Keith Hessler (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) earned the win for the Chants, striking out five and allowing four hits and two run in five innings. Redshirt senior Kent Altman (Conway, S.C./Conway) and freshman Brad Goldberg (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) each pitched two innings and had a combined three strikeouts. Risedorph took the loss, giving up the one earned run in the second inning.
Woodward was 3-for-3 with five runs scored, two RBI, a double and two stolen bases. Witten was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI. For IPFW, Garrett Segraves and VanDreissche had two hits apiece.
Coastal Carolina opens the Caravelle Resort Classic Friday, March 6. The Chants face Albany at 5 p.m., and Stony Brook at 8 p.m, in Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
