CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's track & field team will kick off its 2011 campaign at the seventh annual Battle of the Beaches meet held between the Chanticleers and UNC Wilmington on Saturday, March 5. The meet, which alternates sites each season, will be held at UNC Wilmington's Greene Track & Field Complex.
The Chanticleers, who are led by seventh, look to capture their second consecutive surfboard trophy after winning last season's meet by a mere two points, 105-103. Overall, each team has won the event, which dates back to 2005, three times.
Coastal Carolina is returning five event winners from the 2010 meet. In the running events, Ryan Edlich set the meet's 200-meter mark with a 21.80. The field events will see four Chants looking to repeat as event champions as Jason Jensen and Jason Flanagan seek to better their hammer and javelin distances of 189'5" (57.75m) and 212'10" (64.89m), respectively. Also searching for more event wins at the meet are Jacques Watson, who set the meet record in the high jump last season with a mark of 7'.5" (2.15m), and Chad Phillips in the triple jump. Phillips established the new meet standard in the triple jump with a leap of 47'1.75" 14.36m.
A Quick Look at the Upcoming Season
After a second place finish in the Big South Conference Championships last season, the Chanticleers are returning a batch of proven talent and hoping promising newcomers will fill their roles on the team. Highlighting the class are returning Big South Champions senior Jacques Watson (high jump), junior Chad Phillips (triple jump), junior Kyle Kling (1500m) and junior Jason Flanagan (javelin).
This season's squad also returns seven 2010 NCAA East Preliminary Round qualifiers. Chris Lawson, Ryan Edlich, Corey Jameson, and Lenny Steed comprise the 4x100m relay team whose qualifying mark ranked as high as 19th in the East Region in 2010. Flanagan qualified for the regional in the javelin with a mark of 224' (68.28m) at the CCU/Shamrock Invitational on March 18-20. Jensen also earned a regional spot with his throw of 202'3" (61.66m) in the hammer at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Rounding out the 2010 NCAA Prelimary Round Qualifiers was Watson whose leap of 7'4.5" (2.25m) at the Pepsi Florida Relays ranked second in the region and third in the NCAA.
The Chanticleers welcome four top-newcomers to the squad. Tyler Askew from Salem High School in Conyers, Ga., was the Georgia State long jump champion (24'1" / 7.34m). Charlie Tidwell from Niceville, Fla., was the Florida State champion in the shot put (59'1.25" / 18.01m) and runner-up in the discus (175' 8" / 53.55m) as a senior.
