Men's Track Loses Tough Dual With UNC Wilmington at Battle of the Beach
CONWAY, SC -- Coastal Carolina's men's track team had 10 first-place finishes in the 2006 Battle of the Beach, but lost a tough 104-102 dual to visiting UNC Wilmington, Mar. 4.
The Chanticleers did post two NCAA Regional Qualifying marks in the opening meet of the year. Senior Mark Johnson won the pole vault with a leap of 5.05m (16' 6.75") to qualify for the NCAA East Regional, while sophomore Thomas Jordan, returning from a season-ending injury last year, won the javelin with a throw of 68.33m (227' 5") to also qualify for the regionals.
Freshman Aubrey Lemon had a very solid first collegiate meet for Coastal, winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes and running the second leg of the winning 4x100m relay squad, which ran a time of 41.62 and included sophomore Daniel Stokes and freshmen Jarvarius Phelps and Tyrone Murphy.
Junior Doug Currie won the 1500-meter run in 3:56.20 and then anchored winning Distance Medley Relay that ran a time of 10:32.48.
Other individual winners included senior Nelson Oliveira in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:38.74), junior Tommy Sugishita in the discus (47.35m/155'4" - third all-time at CCU), junior Galen Jones in the hammer throw (55.35m/181'7") and Phelps in the 400-meter dash (49.38).
Coastal returns to the track next weekend, hosting the CCU Invitational, Fri.-Sat., Mar. 10-11 in Conway, S.C.
