Baseball's Woodward, McCully Named to the College Baseball Insider Preseason All-America Team

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University baseball players Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) and Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) were named to the College Baseball Insider Preseason All-America Team, the website announced today (Feb. 17). Woodward was selected to the second team as a utility, while McCully was named an Honorable Mention as a pitcher.   Woodward, a sophomore, hit .364 with 15 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 45 RBI in 64 starts for the Chanticleers. The Big South Freshman of the Year and All-Big South First Team selection had a .540 on-base percentage, which is a single-season school record. He also was hit by a pitch 30 times, which is a school and Big South record. He was named to the All-Conway Regional team, scoring 10 runs and hitting .600 in the three games. Woodward was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the championship game against East Carolina June 1. He drove in five runs in a win over UNC Asheville April 19 and had five hits in a win over Charleston Southern April 12. He led the Big South with 82 runs scored and 42 stolen bases and walked 58 times. Woodward was named to the All-Ping! Baseball Third Team and the Freshman All-Ping! Baseball First Team. He also was a First Team Freshman All-American by Baseball America and Rivals.com, a Second Team Freshman All-American by the NCBWA, a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and a Second Team All-Region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Woodward has earned Preseason All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball, Ping! Baseball, Recruiting Closer and was selected to the Wallace Award Watch List.   McCully, a junior, led the Big South in wins last season, going 10-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 24 appearances and 89.1 innings for the Chanticleers. The 2009 Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year struck out 72 batters compared to 27 walks in 2008, and held opponents to a .245 batting average. He also had three saves on the year. In Big South games, McCully posted a 5-1 record in six starts on the hill and a 1.88 earned run average. Last season he was named to the All-NCAA Conway Regional Team after earning the win over Columbia, was a Second-Team All-Big South selection, and struck out 10 batters in 9.2 innings in the Big South Tournament.   The website named North Carolina’s Dustin Ackley its Preseason Player of the Year, while San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg was the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.   Coastal Carolina opens the 2009 season Friday, Feb. 20, facing Southern Illinois in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
