Baseball's Woodward Named to the Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University sophomore baseball player Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) has been named to the 50-player Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List, it was announced today (Feb. 17) by USA Baseball.    Woodward hit .364 with 15 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 45 RBI in 64 starts for the Chanticleers. The Big South Freshman of the Year and All-Big South First Team selection had a .540 on-base percentage, which is a single-season school record. He also was hit by a pitch 30 times, which is a school and Big South record. He was named to the All-Conway Regional team, scoring 10 runs and hitting .600 in the three games. Woodward was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the championship game against East Carolina June 1. He drove in five runs in a win over UNC Asheville April 19 and had five hits in a win over Charleston Southern April 12. He led the Big South with 82 runs scored and 42 stolen bases and walked 58 times. Woodward was named to the All-Ping! Baseball Third Team and the Freshman All-Ping! Baseball First Team. He also was a First Team Freshman All-American by Baseball America and Rivals.com, a Second Team Freshman All-American by the NCBWA, a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and a Second Team All-Region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Woodward has earned Preseason All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball, Ping! Baseball, Recruiting Closer and College Baseball Insider and was selected to the Wallace Award Watch List.   On May 26, USA Baseball officials will cut the watch list of players to 30 names.  The final list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of select professional baseball personnel, past USA Baseball National Team coaches, select members of the media, former USA Baseball sports information directors, and current USA Baseball staff - close to 150 voters in total.   Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2009.  May 26 will also mark the day when college baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player for the Golden Spikes Award on .  As part of this selection process all voters will be asked to choose five players from the list of 30 names.  On June 2, USA Baseball will announce the five finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.   The 2009 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award will be presented nationally July 15 on an award show via live telecast from St. Louis in conjunction with the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Weekend Festivities.   Last season, the Chanticleers’ David Sappelt was named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List.   Coastal Carolina opens the 2009 season Friday, Feb. 20, facing Southern Illinois in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
