It’s now less than a week until Opening Day for the 2009 Coastal Carolina University baseball season. Season tickets are on sale now. Here is a link for season-ticket information.    There will be a Baseball and Softball Pep Rally at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field Thursday, Feb. 19 from 5-6:30 p.m. There will be free food, games and prizes, a Battle of the Bands Contest and a meet and greet and autograph session with both teams. Here is a video about the event.    There are plenty of previews of the Big South race on various college baseball websites. Here are links of a few of them.    SEBaseball College Baseball Insider Baseball America (subscription service)   Southeastern Baseball also previewed the Chants in their SEBaseball Top 80 section. Here is the link, which will need a subscription to view.    Coastal Carolina earned more Preseason All-American honors. Sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) was a First Team Preseason All-American at utility by Ping! Baseball. He also earned Second Team All-America honors by the website Recruiting Closer. Senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) was named to Ping! Baseball’s Second Team All-America list at first base.   Former Chanticleer standout Mike Costanzo will play for Team Italy in the upcoming 2009 World Baseball Classic. Italy opens the event Saturday, March 7 against Venezuela in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at 8 p.m. The game can be seen on the MLB Network. Costanzo currently is in the Baltimore Orioles organization and played for the Norfolk Tides in 2008.   The Coastal Carolina baseball team raised over $10,000 for the Grand Strand Miracle League and the Mike Pruitt Scholarship Fund at its second-annual “Step Up to the Plate” Dinner at the Chesapeake House in Myrtle Beach.   The Chanticleers were ranked 35th in the county by the Perfect Game Crosschecker rankings. Coastal Carolina is ranked as high as 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll.
