PHILADELPHIA – Members of the Coastal Carolina men’s track and field team partook in the prestigious Penn Relay Carnival at the University Pennsylvania's Franklin Field track on Friday.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Corey Jameson, Chris Lawson, Ryan Edlich and Lenny Steed turned in the most impressive performance of the day with a 41.24 split in the second of 10 heats. The Chants time was the 17th fastest of the 82 competing teams. The mark was the quartet’s third fastest of the season and qualified for the college championship section on Saturday.

Tyler Askew, a freshman from Conyers, Ga., made his Penn Relays debut in the college section of the long jump. Askew finished event with a final distance of 7.0m (22-11.75) to place 17th in the 22 competitor field. Lavell Handy of George Mason won the gold medal in the event with a jump of 7.57m (24-10).

For the first time this season, Coastal entered a team in the sprint medley relay. The relay features legs of 200, 200, 400 and 800 meters ran in succession. The Chanticleer team of Lawson, Jameson, Raheen Frederick and Stevie Brunson turned in a time of 3:37.83 to place 24th overall.

Three Coastal athletes and the 4x100 meter relay team are scheduled to compete on Saturday during the third day of the famed relay carnival. Jason Flanagan and Bryan Fill will first throw in the championship section of the javelin slated to start at 11 a.m. The 4x100 meter relay team will compete in the college section at 1:20 p.m. Jacques Watson will then cap the Chanticleers’ efforts as he attempts to improve on his season-best height of 2.14m (7-0.25) in the championship section of the high jump at 1:30 p.m.
